Who has a good price on new 90 h.p. motors? I am getting ready to put my Montauk back together and have decided to go with the 2-stroke carburetor 90-HP. Any help on this would be greatly apprec.

Thanks

Jeff, I just bought a 2004, 90hp Yamaha 2 stroke in the box for $5,400. If you can find one cheaper, Buy it! I looked all over the place and Bayracer Marine in Havelock NC is by far the cheapest there is. Call and ask for John.

Jeff,

I did this exercise last year and bought a 2001 Mercury 75-HP 2-stroke floor model from Travis Boating center in Stuart Fla. for $3800 + 200 to ship to Mass.

That Yamaha for $5400 sounds like a helluva a deal. I shopped every where (ask Bigshot) and $5000-$5400 was the range for a 90-HP 2-stroke. I do not want to start a debate here , but the Yamaha may be the better engine in this price range. It weighs 261 Lbs compared to the Johnson at 335lbs.

I had to change rigging and gauges going from a OMC to Mercury.

I saved some dough by getting a used Morse MT2 control on Ebay for about $70.00. I love the classic look and the simple operation of the Morse. The Mercury control new was between $200-300 depending upon the model.

New 90-HP 2-strokes are quite attractively priced when purchased on the transom of a new Boston Whaler. Also, many boat dealers--lots of brands-- have to buy their boats pre-rigged and sometimes a customer wants something else. A motor that was orphaned off a pre-rigged transom is often a good deal.

Just two days ago I bought a 2004 JOHNSON 90-HP $4,700 from Custom Marine in Statesboro Ga. Call Will Massey and he will treat you right. Other Continuouswave members have used them. I learned about them on the post on the E-TEC Evinrude under the performance section. They also sell the 90 Yamaha for under $5,000. PS, the 90 Johnson is 105 cubic inches and the 90 Yammi is I think 69 cubic inches. My 99 Ventura @1550 lbs dry needs the higher cubes. Yamaha is hard to beat otherwise. Bob

Purchased 2004 75 HP Yamaha 4 stroke "installation included" with new controls (top mount), gauge (multi-function with tilt, oil, temp, and tach), fuel filter. Only thing I didn't get was new steering. Taking it in for the job this Saturday.

$7,500 at Guentere's Outboards, Sebastopol CA, not including the 7.5% tax. Was able to sell my old 1984 90 2 stroke for $900, pay the taxes and upgrade the compass (used the old trim hole to install a new ritchie dash mount)

Have to repower to 4 stroke or the new E-TEC Evinrudes out here within two years. Some lakes won't allow 2-strokes now.

My local Mercury dealer is quoting $5,560 for a Saltwater 90-HP Mercury 2-stroke. That is just the motor, no propeller, no installation, no controls, no taxes. Currently there are some factory incentives which would reduce that price.

The best price around Nashville I found for a 90 Merc was at Bass Pro. Haven't checked prices since I purchased my 2002 from them but it would probably be worth you're while to look into it. One word of advice, I'd either do the install myself or pay someone else to do it. I wasn't real happy with the work Bass Pro performed installing mine. They are much more acustomed to working with aluminum boats.

To further the Custom Marine endorsement check this out

2 stroke Johnson $4,699
2 stroke Yamaha $4,999

I bought my 03 Yamaha from Frank Franklin (if I remeber correctly), but any of the sales guys there will hook you up. I think a fellow forum member, Mike Brantely, just bought an E-Tec from them if you want to ask him how his dealings went.

Good luck

Just purchased an O4, Yamaha 90 two stroke from my local dealer. His out the door price (Sales tax, etc.) was $5,000.00. I called all the big "National" dealers and by the time the ups downs and extras are added they were at five grand. All rigging, new controls, new steering, new tachometer, water pressure gauge added another grand.

So it appears around $5000 is a competitive price to pay for any brand 90 2-stroke. Better buy those Yamahas before the tariff hike hits them. When shopping between brands, don't forget to compare cubes, alternator output and oil injection design.

Today I was eyeballing a White 2004 90HP Evinrude E-Tec Saltwater series at my very trusted dealer in Detroit MI, and he quoted me $8600 fully rigged on my Nauset out the door, including stainless prop, all new gauges and binnacle control. MI taxes are 6%.

I am not going to repower this year, but given everything, including the service the dealer gives me just on parts and oil purchases for a 34 Year old motor, it seems very reasonable. Today he gave me a liter spray bottle of new all purpose marine spray cleaner that Bombardier is now selling to evaluate... He just wants my opinion on how it works.

If I was to repower... I know what I would do.

I like what I'm hearing about how many people have been dealing with their local dealers rather than going to a huge superstore like Ed's...I'm sure there are many who have had good experiences dealing with these types of stores, but for those of us who don't have the time, experience or tools to tackle a job like this, it's nice to see people keeping their $ close to home...I had a very similar experience when I picked up my 5hp 4-stroke merc kicker last year, I had made up my mind that I was going to purchase from my local merc dealer whom I've been dealing with for 20 years now, really nice guy...before I went it...I talked with him for a while, asked about his kids, he asked about mine...his wife was standing right next to him...(he must be a saint, I don't think I would be able to work with my wife, side by side for all those years)...gave me a price, I put down a deposit and he told me he'd call me when it came in...I was also able to workout a "layaway" deal where I just stopped in and make payments towards the balance during the winter...try that at Ed's)...when I was ready, I picked it up and I was good to go...and his price? $20 +/- what the Superstores were asking and I didn't have to pay shipping...

Food for thought when shopping for an upgrade...

I agree on using the local dealer. I paid $280 more than what I could have gotten my new engine at over the Internet. But on my previous 8 year old motor, my dealer drove to my boat in the middle of July, on a Saturday, to look at my engine and make a minor adjustment to fix an idle/stalling problem. Within an hour after I called him!NO CHARGE! Granted he had to only drive 2 miles, but still, you can not put a price on service when you need it.

90hp2s Johnson - $4,599.

I bought one last year, am very happy wtih it, and have had no trouble at all getting it serviced locally despite not having bought it locally. Fun trip to VA to pick it up, too.

I tried to do business locally and even told them the price I was at. I am in sales and appreciate the "last look". At any rate none of my local dealers could come within $1000.00 of the deal I made in Fla. I even tried to tie into a slip commitment on my part. I will be honest with everyone here... if my local guy could not come within $500.00 bucks even when I offered cash than why go local with the deal? I put $1500.00 into my on pocket, paid my marina cash the day they handed me the bill and pay cash in january for my slip.

The marina that I am at now was happy to rig my Mercury as he is a Mercury certified shop, but does not sell motors. He did suggest I buy a Suzuki 70hp 4 stroke like the one he has on his vintage Montauk ..go figure a Mercury mechanic.
