Hello,

Still trying to sort out the best boat for me. I have narrowed to the two listed above. Would be used in Charleston Harbor, and close to shore, for fishing, general boating, and messing around (crusing). I know the
actual diferences such as gas tank in the Dauntless vs portable gas tanks in Montauk, and the extra seats in the aft section of the Dauntless, and it weights about 100 lbs more than a Montauk....and about a $5k difference in price, the dauntless being more and no trailer supplied..... but for an overall boat, what are the key things I should think about, and which do
you recommend...Thanks for any advice...Bob

Hi Bob,

I take it your are looking new and also that the boats are powered properly?

The newer style Montauk (M170) should ride more like a Dauntless than the old style Montauk. IMO the Montauk is better set up for fishing and the Dauntless for overall boating. If history repeats itself, the Montauk will have better resale value and a bigger market than the Dauntlas. They are both very fine boats, so the choice should be the one you like most.

Regards, Jay

Here's a scale line drawing I put together, comparing the 170 Montauk with the 160 and 180 Dauntless, and 190 Nantucket. Each boat has a 72 qt cooler (factory 170 size) for fish, a 54 qt cooler (factory size on the others) for food and drinks, and a Porta-Potti. The 170 also has a 5 gallon bait bucket compared to the factory baitwells in the other boats. P is the Porta-Potti, B is the bait.

I like the flexibility of the Montauk interior better.

Thanks, Tex. From another drawing I did, it looks like you could also get two 72 qt coolers at the stern, in addition to the one forward of the console.

Here's another one comparing the 150 Sport, classic Montauk 16'7", 170 Montauk, and classic 18 Outrage. The classic 17 and 18 Outrage drawings came from their Commercial Products Division counterparts, and thus have those consoles and seats.

Bob, here are a few links to previous discussions on the topic. The short answer is, it's hard to imagine making a bad decision here. It comes down to the value of open space (advantage Montauk) versus storage, fuel capacity, and power (advantage Dauntless).

I think a 17" and a 16" are both way too small.

If it's just between these two boats, I'd choose the Dauntless..primarily because I like the secure feeling that a belly tank provides in boat stability. I'd be really interested to test drive both on the same day, right after each other to determine how much of a difference this really makes, but with the 18' Outrage and 68 gallon tank in the belly, it felt like a battleship when I first used it.
