Just wondered if a Motorguide transom trolling motor will bolt onto the transom without doing any drilling for mounting purposes.
Thanks,
Dan

I use a MinnKota 3HP transom mount without any problem...I just cover the transom with one of those havy black rubber pads, which I believe was from MinnKota.

Dan, I have a 3HP Minnkota that, unfortunately, won't fit over the rubber rub rail which wraps around and follows the transom on my 1999 hull. I don't want to attach a motor mount with fasteners and haven't yet figured out a solution.

Dan,

I use a 55lb Thrust MinnKota Maxxum back troller on my 170 Montauk. Like the 50lb Thrust Motorguide, it will not mount directly on the transom. I have a custom built bracket that's bolted to the transom that works fine. Check out some pictures in my profile link. I also have the drawings. If you need them send me an e-mail and I will send them to you this weekend.

Donzi,

My Montauk is from 1975. The rub rail does not continue to transom. The MinnKota transom mount bracket fits fine for me, but it sounds like you have a 170 and have to deal with rub rail and bracket won't fit.

Thanks for everyone's input. I had a MinnKota but returned it since I was looking more for just a bolt on thing rather than doing any custom mounting application. If the motor mount bolts were longer, I could just fabricate a metal plate and attach the trolling motor to the plate. The bolts are sealed in so I guess that ended that thought. Looks like Motorguide has a 3.25" bracket on their more pricey trolling motors which may work.

Dan,
You may also want to try an engine mounted model. Works great. Here is a link to a pick of mine.

I put a 109lb thrust great white on 17' alert with no problem. Transom mounted.

jmorgan40,
I would like to put one of these on my Montauk. How long will it run on one group 27 battery. Does it steer easily ?
Where did you get it, and what did it cost?
I run a trotline crabbing and this looks like a cool set-up.
It would be nice to have no noise or smoke from my 2-stroke!
Thanks,
Fritz

Can I get by with a 36" shaft or would I need a 42" shaft. I use the boat just in lakes which are fairly calm. Looks like the Motorguide with the wide-bite mount may work since it will accommodate up to 3 1/4" transom.
thanks for the input...

That is the first time I saw an engine mounted trolling motor. Who is it made by?
thanks,

Donzi - read his page:
"If you view the shots of the motor, you will notice I have added an engine mounted electric trolling motor. It is a MotorGuide Navigator stainless model with 54 lbs. of thrust. This is plenty for the feather light montauk and it will push the boat up to 4 MPH. I do alot of freshwater striper fishing but did not want to drill any holes in the boat for a bow mounted motor. I opted for the 12 volt model due to limited storage space for batteries. I also upgraded to the stainless model since I do take the boat to Florida once or twice a year on vacation."

Love that setup. Very clean install.

Thanks again...I always had good luck with Cabelas or Bass Pro.

Would a transom mounted trolling motor, mounted on the left side, clear the engine steering linkeage adequately?

That motor from Cabelas looks slick but my need is for a trolling motor I can run in very shallow water with the main outboard tilted up.

I don't want to drill any more holes in my old Sakonnet or I would do a bow mount.

How does a standard transom mount handle? Does it tend to crab sideways since it has to be mounted quite far outboard of center?

I am really interested in feedback as I do mostly solo flats fishing and a push pole is too cumbersome to handle while trying cast with a spinning rod.

Thanks for any comments ro advice,

Bob on Tampa Bay

Robob2003,

Transom mount works fine and does not crab...Transomount shaft slides in the mount and can be raised or lowered as desired...The shaft and motor also swing forward (up) easily to get out of water and cruise with your outboard.

I usually leave big motor down when trolling electric and use it to steer as a rudder with trolling motor locked in straight forward position. Big motor down also great for controlling direction of drift which can be augmented with "bumps" from trolling motor.

Only down side to transom mount is the bow can swing in high winds...this effect can be offset slightly by sending your fat fishing buddy to fish from the bow.

whalerajm,

I'm the fat fishing buddy:-)

I usually go solo and your answer has put me on the right track.

Thanks,

There was a thread a while back that discussed the pros and cons of mounting a trolling motor on the transom in terms of the effect of wind. The opinion stated was that you had much more control with a bow mounted trolling motor in that the wind didn't push you off course as happens with the trolling motor on the transom. Something to consider...
