Okay. I think I just heard whatever is in these two boxes call my name....

How am I supposed to get any work done while these babies are sitting in a box waiting for me to come and get them?

Location, Andy!...all about location! They know that I can just drive up there and create an international incident if they kept me hanging on indefinitely!

Just kidding, of course. Are you ordering the 150 or the 200?

Could it be due to the boat shows and demand? The dealer said that the 90's were in "short supply but available" - to me that meant that they're just keeping up with demand...and if the boat shows go well, this spring, there will likely be a waiting list for a month or so.

At this point, it has become imperative that I remove the old 150 from my transom as quickly as possible. Fortunately, I have a few interested parties; and hopefully I can ink a deal this weekend.

...and there are times that I wish financial institutions worked much faster than they do. There is a chance I'll have to wait until next weekend to pick those motors up - even though they have my name on them, and are waiting patiently for me...

I'm waiting on a 200. The official word is they are built and sitting in a warehouse, but have not been "released" for sale yet. The last update was that they will start shipping to dealers today. Feel free to start an international incident on my behalf if you are in the neighborhood...

Andy and Eric -
Are you guys dealing with a "master" Evinrude dealer?

My good fortune could have to do with the fact that the 90 has been around for awhile now, as well as proximity.

But literally, I ordered this engine a week ago and it got to the dealer on Tuesday...so 5 business days (4, really!).

I also can't help but wonder if it has to do with the dealer. My guy (in Detroit) seemed to have the best price in the Midwest (after calling about 8 other dealers) and he is a fairly high-volume dealer with a long-standing relationship with both Johnson and Evinrude (since 1920's).

I'm dealing with a very large east coast Evinrude dealer, the same that Ratherwhalering purchased from. I absolutely think I'm getting straight answers from the salesman, and he's been very responsive. I plan to give Evinrude a call today to see if they have any new information.

Evinrude says the 2.6L 200's will ship mid to end of February. Off the record, the customer service rep told me it's related to delays with EPA completing its certification process. He told me that they will ship as 2007 model year motors, for what that's worth.

Dave, I've been too busy lately to monitor the forum as closely as usual, so I missed where you ordered the new power. But I wanted to say congratulations, man -- Gambler is going to be very nicely outfitted.

Andy, my much smaller E-Tec on my former (very recently sold) Whaler came from that same East Coast dealer from which you've ordered, and my experience with this dealer was good. Everything I was told about delivery time proved to be true.

Good luck with your repowering projects, guys.

No offense was meant - are your guys in GA?

Sounds like a straight response to me - nice to have an answer though.

Eric - I wonder if BRP is restricting the quantities of export for some reason (fill the North American market pipeline?)?

erik selis posted 01-25-2006 02:19 PM ET (US)     Profile for erik selis  Send Email to erik selis
Dave,

I don't know if they are restricting export quantities but the dealer did mention a 3 month delivery time. I do recall that forum member Alex K. from Germany also had to wait a very long time for the delivery of his 60-hp E-Tec. Maybe the demand in North America is very high and that the home market has priority? In any case the dealer where we bought this engine is planning on showing it at the upcoming boat show in February, so he will be hot on the heels of the factory.
Btw, the dealer is a master Evinrude dealer and IMO seems to know quite a lot about these engines.

Good luck with your new power Dave. Gambler will be looking and running sharp !

Mike -

Very good.

I just wanted to make sure. In my year-long research for this engine purchase, I did a lot of talking to people and dealers about various engines and experiences with dealerships, pricing and so forth.

I've come to the conclusion that finding a good dealer is the single most important factor in buying an engine - Price is secondary; though I certainly expect a competitive price from the dealer I'd buy from.

I salivated at online pricing from places like Eds, but then did the research (BBB reports, etc) which changed my mind about buying strictly on price (though I found that by continuing to search, I found what I consider a good value on that front).

Could I have purchased these motors for less money in initial outlay? Yes. I'd have had to drive to SE Florida to buy them though.

It's been 4 years since I was last in SE Florida...so that isn't a very convenient place to purchase an engine from - especially since those particular dealers would not ship a loose motor to me.

I finally found (upon CW Member recommendations) a good dealer. He's a few hours away from where the boat is kept, but his price beat the closest competition's "top secret; dealer cost" pricing by more than $300 per engine, and beat my normal mechanic's price by more than $1,000 per engine.

...but I digress, and my dealer just sent me another teasing photo of the "twins" waiting for me with their boxes open. He's also suggesting names. How cruel!

They have names.

Hey, I figure if women can name their twins, I can name mine, right?!!!

Castor and Pollux - seems fitting:
Castor was famous for taming and managing horses, and Pollux for skill in boxing. They were united by the warmest affection, and inseparable in all their enterprises. They accompanied the Argonautic expedition. During the voyage a storm arose, and Orpheus prayed to the Samothracian gods, and played on his harp, whereupon the storm ceased and stars appeared on the heads of the brothers. From this incident, Castor and Pollux came afterwards to be considered the patron deities of seamen and voyagers (One of the ships in which St. Paul sailed was named the Castor and Pollux. See Acts xxviii.II.), and the lambent flames, which in certain sates of the atmosphere play round the sails and masts of vessels, were called by their names.

Dave - Any problem with Jim's dealer, or with Evinrude, installing an overpower situation? We keep hearing about that so much around here. Old wive's tale? What about insurance?

I think you should have ordered them in Evinrude saltwater white, so people don't think you're running around with a pair of Suzuki's.

Buckda posted 01-25-2006 02:57 PM ET (US)     Profile for Buckda  Send Email to Buckda
I'm installing these engines. The wive's tale is true for some dealers and untrue for others; though the ones who would do the install would not indicate that they actually did the install on the invoice...so take that how you want to.

Once I have possession of the motors, I'll tackle the re-registering of the boat and the insurance. I may be giving you and LCG a call on that front - we'll see which way my agent goes.

Dave, the engine power thing sounds a lot like what we have in Pa. with 10hp limits on some lakes, the dealers sell a lot of 9.9hp stickers for some reason. I think the blue motors will look better then the white on a classic Whaler . Plus it is a way to meet Larry half way, you still are sorta on the dark side! Gambler was a great boat, sounds like it's going to be awesome!....Jack

The stars of Gemini include two of the most recognisable in the heavens: the twins Castor and Pollux.

Castor is the slightly dimmer star. It has a visual magnitude of 1.93 and is 52 light years distant. It isn't a particularly large star, at about twice the Sun's diameter. The star is a noted binary. Pollux is the brighter of the two stars with a visual magnitude of 1.16 and a distance of 33.7 light years. It is also considerably larger, with an estimated diameter of about ten Suns.

Castor and Pollux are 4.5 degrees apart, which helps observers estimate separation distances between other stars.

It is the GA dealer, and so far I think I'm getting honest and accurate info. The delays are clearly because the motor is a new product on the market. If I wanted a big block, they could ship it to me today.

Working on two alternate routes in case I encounter SuperBowl pre-game celebration traffic.

I'm staying mostly South of the city though, so it should not be too bad...plus I'm used to Chicago traffic...every day.

Dave,
your best route would be I-94 E/B to Southfield Xway, go north to Outer Drive Exit, go right (south) on Outer Drive to the end where it Meets West Jefferson. Go Left (East) on Jefferson and go about 5 Miles to Lockeman's Hardware & Boats. You should not see any significant Superbowl traffic going that route and it will keep you out of some of Seedier areas of S/W Detroit that you would hit with some other routes.....Trust me this is your best route....only thing you need to worry about now is the weather, they're predicting 3"-6" of the white stuff tomorrow....

By the way how are you transporting the twins ? Trailer ?
it would be a shame for them to get wet & cold and not be on the back of a boat when they do....

I'll be looking for you at Lockemans around Noon...you have my cell

Oh-oh. Just got a call from Dave seeking legal advice. Apparently Lockeman's was real busy when he got there, so they just loaded up the two unopened boxes and hustled him out the door. He didn't open the boxes until he got back home, and surprise!, instead of two spankin' new E-TEC 90s he found himself the proud owner of two used 1999 Optis.
Bummer, and it's not even April 1st yet... ;-)

Well, several of us went for the joyous event of the delivery of Dave’s new twins. It was a most happy occasion with us ooohing and aaahing over the two adorable new ones. We also enjoyed reviewing all the new accessories he got, to make sure that his new little ones will be safely and securely settled into their new home. The “Doctor” at Lockeman’s gave Dave lots of good advice for a new father about the care and feeding of the twins. And Dave promised to bring them back for a checkup in a few weeks.

The only less than joyous time was when it came time for Dave to pay the bill for the twin’s delivery. Unfortunately Dave’s health insurance refused to cover this delivery (something about no coverage for adoptions), so Dave had to foot the whole bill himself.

Well, congratulations Dave! I’m sure you will have years of fun playing with your twins.

Actually, both boxes moved!

Saturday Update:

Buckda made it to Detroit ahead of the winter storm approaching from the southwest. He loaded Castor and Pollux on the trailer, and towed them back to the barn. We had a fun time watching the whole process. In addition to the big crates with the new motors, there was a huge box of parts and things. This ought to keep Dave busy for many weeks.

Dave, just curious to exactly what your dealer told you. Is there an initial "start up" procedure? I mounted my E-TEC and took is straight to the dealer for the XD-100 reprogramming, but I believe our resident E-TEC experts say to run them with the XD-50 oil until after the 10 hour break in, then do the reprogramming to XD-100 oil.

And for godness sake man, remember to remove the oil line shipping clamp!

Dave - you have become captain of our ETEC field tester team - I think the BRPs ought to be tracking your experiences if not assisting or maybe even National Geographic. I know my future holds a decision point regarding new power either on 13 or my Montauk or Outrage that hasn't found me yet. My 92 Yamaha ran great last Friday - better than ever. However, if I wind up doing all these adventures I want to do reliability will be priority one which might mean new power. Since I have had such amazing luck with Honda cars an outboard based on Civic or Accord engines is compelling. Weight and 4 stroke are negatves. I will certainly stay tuned.

I'm sure you'll keep up apprised of your experiences.

Best of luck and many happy voyages to you, your crew and passengers.

Dave, That picture of you smiling by your new sweeties, tells it all!
All this has made me rethink my plans for a single 150 on my Guardian!
Look forward to your up coming posts.
Good Luck!

Dave-- I can see your a happy man! Remember my mechanic installed the Computer Program on my laptop for those engines and I bought the patch cord so if you ever need to check those engines you can come over and I'll hook them up. I know I'm a little bit of a ride but if you ever need to, just let me know.

Thanks guys -

...and thanks for the direct link to the photos, Jim!

Rob-
No word on any of that from the retailer. I'm going to do the install first and then take it back to him for a final check before I fire them. He's going to program them for XD-100. I heard the computer uses extra oil for the first few hours even with the XD-100.

Here's a better picture of the engines while they await the fiberglass guy to finish the transom:

Any time spent at lockemans is not only fun but informative as well. It was great listening to Dave Z. talk about to Dave about trickes of the motors, doing the wiring, the features of the E-Tecs, etc. Also learned alot about the E-tecs themselves while down there. Dave Zammitt truely is a mythbuster of sorts when it comes to E-Tec and outboard myths. He armed Dave B. with some great ammo for the critics around here.

Any way, Dave here are the pictures I took. I even got one of Jim trying to loot your box of goodies.

Dave, congrats on your new additions.
The 15 worked great this summer, I've got my 8 yr old and 6 yr old "hooked" on fishing. The only problem is now I have a case of 2 footitis!
Good Luck,
Jeff

Hey Jeff -
Good to see you joined the board!

If you ever want/need to re-sell that 15, please give me a call. I'll take her back - I miss her more than I thought I would - but I'm very happy that she found a loving home.

Cheers!

Dave

Dave, Neat to see the pics, I wish I had talked to Dave Z. By the way I used the XD50 last year but I'm switching over to XD100 this year. Did Dave Z say anything about the oil? I also sold my old 15 sport, But it won't be far, my brother bought it! I've been looking for something for Fl for next year.

He did not say anything remarkable about the oil.
He gave me two gallons of XD-100 (gratis) and said to bring the containers back when I have the motors on and rigged, and he'll refill them with XD-100; which should get me through the whole year!

Dave,

Congratulations! Great looking engines. Can't wait to see them in action. BTW, how will you tell the twins apart once they are out of their boxes?

Steve
