The word "posh" is often cited as being an acronym for "port out, starboard home," a notation made on requests for accommodations on British liners sailing to India. A cabin on the port side of the ship on the outbound journey would be in the shade, as would a cabin on the starboard side on the homeward bound passage. However, this etymology is also often cited as apocryphal. |

Wow Jim I had seen Chitty Chitty Bang Bang many times before I discovered that the inventors father (retired navy) was singing Port Out Starboard Home (POSH), in the movie. Watch it again and you will see the song is bases on POSH.Archie |

Port Out Starboard Home also works for British liners sailing the North Atlantic to the USA. Port (south) side would get whatever sun there was UK->USA, as would the Starboard (south) side going back. Chuck

From Wickepedia... RADAR was coined in 1941 as an acronym for Radio Detection and Ranging. This acronym of American origin replaced the previously used British abbreviation RDF (which stands for Radio Direction Finding). The term has since entered the English language as a standard word, radar, losing the capitalization in the process.VHF: Very high frequency

It's not an acronym, but I like the "Do I want a wood boat test". You turn the water in your shower on cold and let in run. Then you stand under the cold water ripping up 100 dollar bills. If you find this enjoyable then you are ready to buy a wood boat. |
