For the owners of [Mercury motors with DTS], today I learned from my Mercury Application Engineer that he will be visiting us tomorrow or Wednesday to re-flash all the Verados and DTS OptiMax in the plant--44 in all. Seems the version 072 ECMs have a tendency, all by themselves, to stop shifting. No forward, no reverse. I don't know all the details right now, but I will certainly find them out and reply to this post. Has anyone received any notice of this through their dealer? I know he is going to spend at least two days with us as 40 of these motors are hung and tilted up, and he has to do the re-flashing at the motor end, so he has to get up in the boat, put a battery in it, tilt down to get the cowling off. I don't envy him.

Let you know more when I know more. Anybody care to comment?

Bob--Thanks for the information, but I must remind you that there is no such thing as a 2007 model year Verado. Mercury motors do not have model years. It is not appropriate to try to identify Mercury motors by assigning them a model year. Model years have been eliminated by Mercury in order to give their customers (their dealers) a big advantage over other brands which have model year designations.

Jim,
You are absolutely correct. But the current ECMs will not work with 2006s. Therefore my call out to "2007" models. I will inform with the details tomorrow or Wednesday. Probably tomorrow.

Stay tuned.

Sal,
I will tell you where to look on either the ECM behind your helm or the ECM on your powerhead. They both have to match. Might even provide you with a pic...Jim, take notice. Talk to you guys later.

Guys,
Anybody care to give me a hand with Photobucket? Can't you just drag and drop?

Anyway,
Casco Bay is going to post the pic for me. I just wanted to get a good shot of it so you guys could see what to look for. The pic is of the PCM, or Propulsion Control Module, located on the powerhead, starboard side, behind the plastic cover.

The question is going to be, "How are the boats in the field going to be dealt with?". I would have to assume that, since this effort is being undertaken at the OEM level to such an extent, it would have to come out in recall and dealer appointment form. I hope so. I will find out tomorrow and let you know. I know that our field engineer will spend 2 full days with us, as we have the units on the lot to take up that kind of time. And this module is used on the L4s and L6s.

O.K. Guys, here's the deal. Seem's there have been occurances of DTS systems that didn't want to shift after a potentiometer issue had been detected and the fault reported to the system. The new software will still see a fault occurance, but will over ride the fault and allow you to shift gears. It is a safety issue, and enough issues have come up that Merc has decided to re-program all the ECMs (I'm sorry, I was led to believe PCMs) with the "Orange" label will be reprogrammed up to the latest software version.

The reason for my picture was to show you owners a PCM/ECM that has that orange label, part of the total decal that identifies these parts. As a registered owner, you will be recieving a notice to bring your boat into the dealer so it can be re-programmed. JimH, that answers your question about the pic.

I believe my point in this whole post is two-fold. First, and foremost, is to bring attention to Verado/Opti/DTS owners that there could be a fairly serious issue with your system. The second is that it seems that some people here think that I bad mouth Merc's Smartcraft and/or DTS systems unfairly. As I have said in the past, love their motors, hate their systems.

Today, my good friend from Merc showed up to start his task. In the 92 degree sun, dragging a battery cart around with him so he can get down in the bilge, hook it up so he can power up the system, he got 9 motors done today out of 44 total. He's not real happy right now...
