1988 Montauk with 1988 Mercury 90HP.If the boat looks good I will have a compression test and inspection performed on the boat by a local boat yard. Do I need to have the boat weighed to see if water is an issue internally? Also, does anyone think I might be able to get a couple of seasons (New England) out of this engine without having to invest a ton or replace it. Lets assume the compression test returns positive results. Thanks in advance, lots of great information here..

My 2 cents on the used outboard is any time that you buy one, it's a crap shoot. You may get 6 days out of it, you may get 6 years. It depends on how the prior owner ran it and serviced it. It's a used outboard and it's out of warranty. Go ahead with the compression check, if all checks out, run it for as long as you can. Good luck |

I was in the same situation almost three years ago, only mine was a 1983 with a 1985 motor. Owner had babied it, and it had extremely low hours.(340 over 22 years) I pulled the trigger, and I got two full seasons out of the motor, and then it died. I am currently in limbo wanting to repower, but due to financial concerns and a baby on the way, I am leaning more towards finding a good used engine and getting three or four seasons out of it before I do my true "repower." It is a crapshoot, and knowing what I know now I think I would have opted for something with a much newer engine. It all comes down to dollars and cents and what you are willing to spend I suppose. |
