After losing my old 75 Merc 2-stroke, I decided to re-power with a Yamaha F60 four-stroke. It was a 25-hour return from a yacht owner who decided his tender was under-powered, which resulted in a significant saving. In addition, the warranty is good for another 18 months.

I'm very happy with the results. The folks at Galleon Marine in Richmond, BC were great to work with. I brought them the boat stripped and clean, with new tanks and all the fittings and fuel lines ready to go. My fiance even gave me a Garmin 76CSx as a re-launch present. Awesome.

Those of you who know the Gulf Islands of BC, and the city of Vancouver might appreciate a few pics and story of my 1986 Montauk's first day back in the water. With the ferry transits from Saltspring to Vancouver and awaiting a time to hang the new motor, I was able to do a 50 hours refurbish (teak, electrical, rub-rail, motor, tanks, fuel etc).

I put up a very brief log and some pics of a very "urban" exploration of Vancouver harbour, and up Indian Arm (spectacular), on a mountain bike website that I admin/moderate. This is in the "Not Biking Related" section, which means other post in response and certainly other threads may be NSFW.

Net/net - I'm very happy with the boat, the motor, the performance.

Very nice pictures Nat. Looks like you guys had a great time. Wonderful place to take the boat for a cruise. I'm sure you will be very please with that F60 Yamaha. You'll probably burn half the fuel you did with your 75 Merc.
Good luck!

Erik

Awesome indeed.

I'm pretty sure that if I came home with a new Yamaha for my Whaler, my wife would give me a GPS too.

Thanks for looking at the pictures, and the comments. I've got 7 hours on the F60 now, and I have to say it feels like a new boat. As a Mac user, it took me a while to get things sorted with the Garmin - in fact I ended up having to use Parallels and installing XP, and then downloading a new build of Parallels to address USB issues - in order to get MapSource working.

In terms of performance (and I'll convert to Imperial from Metric as I appreciate that most of the forum members are based in the US), we covered 63.5 nautical miles. Average speed was about 16 knots at about 4700 RPM, and highest speed was 24.5 knots at 5500 RPM (4 adults, two full 6.6 gallon tanks, cooler, food, anchor) in 5 - 8 knot winds and calm morning sea. The prop is 10 5/8 x 12, which was put on after WOT on a 13 was 5300 RPM.

Fuel consumption over the day was just over 11 gallons, but some segments of the harbour tour were in No Wake zones, or we were going extremely slow (as in going between the twin hulls of under the Fast Fail Cat Ferries:

Edit - just back from an evening cruise around Vancouver harbour; the new F60 seems to like cruising at 5100 RPMs, giving me a steady 21 knots. Quiet, smooth. As always, this site is a great resource and was/is a great resource.
