My 19 Montauk is on Woodcleft Canal in Freeport, Long Island, with many large charter boats, fishing boats, and large fishing-draggers boats. What [is causing the black streak on the hull of my 190 MONTAUK]? [Are the black streaks caused by] the diesel from passing boats? From general pollution everywhere? Regular car soap didn't do anything to it or very little with a lot of elbow grease thrown in. I bought 3M Black Streak Remover and 3M Boat Wash [but have not tried them yet]. I'll try the 3M boat wash first. |

I think it's just dust that's left on the boat, gets into the gelcoat, then it rains and creates streaks. Any wax should take it off. |

I grew up in Freeport and put myself through college working on Woodcleft Canal. It used to get so dirty at the end of the canal where I worked that we would tightly tie up all of the boats, put them in reverse and push all the crap back up the canal. |

Don't complain. Look what I picked up today launching on the Petaluma River (which isn't really a river at all, but instead the very uppermost reach of the San Francisco Bay complex): http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b309/elaelap/PetalumaRiver15002.jpg Tony |

That looks like otter excrement to me. |

Try some industrial strength toilet bowl cleaner, and follow up with a Mr. Clean magic eraser. |

Wax is not a solvent. A hull with a good wax finish will clean up better than one without. When a hull has a good wax finish, do not use a strong solvent to wash it, or you will remove the wax. |

I get black streaks that accumulate from water dripping off my mooring cover. Keep some cleaner was (I use a bottle of Collinite's 870) handy and it wipes right off without too much effort. |

I waxed it about 6 weeks ago with 3M boat wax. I have been washing with Zip car wash /wax. I bought some 3M boat wash but it is still not clean. It is worse on the flat surfaces where dirt collects. Canal is really not that dirty now. Few dead fish heads once in a while floating. Two sunken large commercial fishing boats which is not great. I have a cleaner wax I'll test on a spot and keep it waxed better possibly every three weeks. Thanks! |

That's cleaner "wax". I wax my entire hull with the cleaner wax, and a top coat of pure wax twice during the season. The black streak areas require a quick go over about every 3 weeks. Only takes about 20 minutes. |

Tony, that looks like a job for MaryKate "On & Off". |

Thanks for that, T.A. Actually it was choppy in San Pablo Bay just south of the Petaluma River and most of that gunk washed right off as I bounced around there for a couple of hours. I got rid of the rest with some "Formula II" Orange cleaner wipes when I washed down my boat and flushed the motor after my little cruise. Those things are real handy on board for all kinds of messes, BTW. Tony |

"On & Off" is great stuff! It gets rid of all the various stains your boat picks up. |

I used some Mequiars cleaner wax and it worked great even on the non-skid surface. Thank for the help guys! |

Most of the manufacturers of marine cleaners sell a "black streak remover". I've never found this to be any more effective than some of the other more general-purpose cleaners mentioned in the above replies. I swear, if you bought a specialized cleaner for every boating dirt issue, you'd have about 156 of them. I already have what seems like an inordinate number. |

I bought the 3M streak cleaner but my finger with saliva worked as good. 3M boat soap failed also even rubbing hard, Cleaner wax was the best and didn't require me trying to press my hand through the hull. Yes between cars and boats I have a huge collection of cleaners and polish. Probably need about 6 items for all of them. Spouse thinks I'm nuts! |

elaelap...that is what happened to my Mako when I splashed it. Waxed and new bottom paint just to be ruined when launching. A brush does not get it off alone. Disgusting. Some ding dong must have bilged out his oil or something. |
