YIKES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great photos, Sal, and I used the word "great" with purpose and meaning. What a fine photo montage or triptych those striking shots would make mounted/framed together.

Better you than me to even be in the same state as that stuff, let alone in a boat in the middle of that ugliness. Brrrrr...

Sal,
Thanks for sharing those. What a display!

The title of your thread would be good life advice. Are you thinking of starting a talk show? :)

Thanks guys.

And Tony thank you for your trip narrative and photos. I aspire to do that kind of trip one day.

I had a waterspout like that come at me out of nowhere in Islamorada in the Florida Keys. I was in the OCEAN in a Grumman square stern canoe with a 5hp motor on the back! I though I was history but fortunately the thing dissipated at the last minute as quickly as it had formed.

I was down in the keys (Long Key State Park) at the end of July 08, saw a water spout come down, big cone (like the one in Sal's picture) then 1/2 way down the spout divided itself into three tails, happened on the bay side, I have never seen this before (have the pictures)...be safe

What surprises me is the anchored boats. I'd be setting a
record for how fast I could pull the hook and get the heck
outta there.

Nice pictures Sal. That must be scary though. I wouldn't want to be out on the water with one of those around. I think I would beat Chucks record getting that anchor out.

Sal, thanks for the fantastic shots! It has been one wild and wooly ride on the bay this summer, hasn't it?
I have never seen such dramatic storms and so much wind and hail in any summer I can remember, and I've weathered 53 of 'em in the shadow of Barnegat Lighthouse.

After all the troughy weather this season, and weeks of howling south wind and the associated cold and dirty water, we are now settling down to the sweetest time in the bay. Mild cold fronts from Canada, followed by bluebird days. The bay is warm enough to swim (I did the past two days-79 degrees) and full of fish. Those weaks are in the same places you got 'em last year-in droves. The peanut bunker are in the lagoons, the snapper blues are growing by an inch a week, and the bottom is paved with kingfish, blowfish and assorted tropicals, too. And don't forget those hickory shad-aka Jersey Tarpon!

WOW.

That's a mean looking waterspout.

The only thing that would make me nervous is the waterspout. I would have pulled anchor forsure!

You don't have time to pull an anchor with waterspouts. They come and go in a matter of seconds sometimes.

Nice pics, here in the PNW they (water spouts) are rare so we live through you guys on the other corner of the country.

Questions: If you don't have time to pull the hook, what do you do? Tie off the bitter end (of the anchor) to a bumper/buoy, mark the GPS and scoot out. Or do you sit it out with lifejackets and pray that the canvas doesn't turn you into a sailboat.

Dropping the bimini would be a prudent move.

this is when it's a good idea to drop the bimini

Beautiful pictures Sal. I'm happy to say that the Raritan has been spared from these monstes so far.

There were several water spouts to the North of us in Long Island Sound, and to the South in your neck of the waters.

Glad you were safe and sound.
Joe
