I just wanted to take the time and thank Tom for his help and the many PM e-mails and photos we shared back and for to resolve my issues w/porpoising. We raised the engine 2 bolt holes and changed to the reccommended 4 blade prop that Tom had suggected and after running it yesterday, I can say the problem was solved. Not, it is not a whaler, they were out of my leage w/I purchaed the boat. It is a 1989 Seacraft 23WA w/new 225 HP Honda installed. I am getting 5900 rpm (Honda reccommends 5000-6000 for the motor) and around 42-44 mph w/decent water. It looks like I will be getting about 8 mpg @4000 @ 28-30 mph. I will have to run some more to see if the 4 blade gives the expected mid range efficiency. Would be nice to get 7 mpg, I was getting 2mpg @ 10-12 gph w/my old 220 Merc carbed engine.
Again thank you TOM for taking time to help me out.

Are you saying that you are getting 8 miles per gallon at 28 to 30 miles per hour?

That's a fuel burn of about 3.5 to 3.75 gallons per hour at 4000 rpms.

I am not busting your chops, just seems a bit unrealistic for a 225 horsepower engine on a 23 foot boat.

At 8 gallons per hour at 4000 rpm that would result in 3.5 to 3.75 miles per gallon for 28-30 mile per hour speed. I would expect those results, which is excellent fuel economy for an engine and boat that size.

If I knew I could get 8 miles per gallon on my 23 footer by replacing my 225 Merc. with a new Honda 225, I would seriously consider doing so.

That would four times the efficiency I am currently experiencing. Let us in on the results please.

No, I am not saying that at all. I am saying I am using about 8 gallons per hour. Hopefully, 3-4 miles per gallon( I would get about 2mpg w/the mercury), those are just guesstimates since I only have about 15 hours on the engine at this point. Sorry for the mistake. I din't catch that in the orginial post.

Ahh! That's more in line with what I would expect. You did say "It looks like I will be getting about 8 mpg @4000 @ 28-30 mph."
Got my hopes up for new technology I may have missed.
Thanks for the clarification.

TWC is certainly the man. Are you a member of www.classicseacraft.com? That is where you will find a wealth of knowledge about your new boat and I am certain that we (over there!?!) could all benefit from Tom's insight and resources. Thanks for the report. zotcha.

Gary,

You are welcome. I just wish dealers were more knowledgeable about motor mounting heights and propellers. It's not that tough to figure out.

I look forward to seeing some real data on your new motor's fuel efficiency as I am now beginning to look hard at repowering my own boat.
