The weather in the Pacific Northwest (PNW) turned last week, and I broke out the original canvas set [for a what is presumed to be a 1983 Boston Whaler MONTAUK]. I put together a forward shelter, bimini, forward window connecting bimini to shelter, port and starboard side curtains. I couldn't find the aft drop curtain. These are all original, but never used since 1983. I am still pulling the backing used on the window stiching, and little pieces of thread from cutting and sewing. I have a couple [corroded] stainless steel snaps on the aluminum frame, but other than that, [the condition of the original canvas is] almost new. The color is awful, a kind of tweed brown, but it gives the boat some character. It turns some heads on the water and marina. I'll try and get some pics. Where are the markings from the OEM? Were the canvas sets soley supplied by Boston Whaler? Or was it managed at the [dealer] level? Was Mills the sole supplier of the canvas in 1983? If not Mills, then who? |

I am sure you have a full Mills set. Give them a call and you will get the original installation instructions. |

Many, if not most, of the Montauks sold in the PNW were sold with canvas made by King Marine in Seattle, not Wm. J. Mills Co. I suspect this is what you have but if it *is* Mills, there will be a small white tag on each piece of canvas sown into the hem with "Wm. J. Mills Co." on the inside with the part number of each piece as well. A photo would also show if it is Mills or not. The Mills is the superior product and the only official Whaler canvas from that time period. |

Here's a few shots of a Mills set on a '79 Montauk for reference. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v408/andygere/ Random%20Whaler%20Photos/montauk.jpg

While it looks a lot like Mills, it isn't, one give away is that the front of the forward shelter sits back farther than Mills, and Mills has a distinct bracket outside that holds the front bow down to the deck. Also the Mills side curtains zip at the top to the fly top, yours appear to snap....all that being said, yours looks like a nice setup and appears to fit nicely.....I also think you're right about the color....some of the older 1970's era Outrage Mills canvas came in a tan color I believe the official color name was "Toast", a lot lighter color than yours... Yeah it's not Mill's; I found a small sticker on the glass that said King Marine. It would have been nice because the condition is almost new and it fits just perfect. I have been trying to keep the boat original. I am going to have the console glass replaced with a hard laminated plexi-glass like material. Even though the current canvas is new, the years of storage have caused some weird patterns that are hard to see through. On our other boat, the forward part of the flybridge is inclosed with the plexi and is a dream to see through. I also need to figure out a hole so I can poke the VHF antenna through. I have to lay it flat at the moment, and I am worried about stepping on it. |

Looks great! Sweet boat. That's many, many bucks worth of canvas, King or Mills. I for one like the darker color as well as the lighter Mills 'toast.' Now let's hear about Pacific salmon. We've had a closed season down here for the first time in at least the past 22 years that I know about, so I badly need a vicarious fix. Thx, Tony |

One certain way to identify if the canvas were the work of Wm. J. Mills & Co.: while trying to fasten the pieces together you would be swearing and wondering why there couldn't have been 1/8-inch more material used. |

Tony: Are you talking about the fish or the girlfriend? You know jimh hates ambiguity. ;-)

Also, the Mills flying top would have 2, opposing, 1/4" twisted nylon rope cross ties on the front bow with the other end secured to the top of the console rail with a small, sort of footman's loop. My 1965 Sakonnet had the cross tie footman's loop attached to the top of the windshield frame. Doug |

"A footman's loop." Now there's a term! |

Another term for padeyes or eyestraps, maybe? Never heard it used before in a sailing or recreational boating context. Tony |

Nice looking canvas set, and great looking fish. I've used a plastic polish from Meguiar's to remove scratches from the clear vinyl windows with great sucess. Get some and polish out those windows, you'll be amazed. Places like West carry it, and it comes in a small blue squeeze bottle. |
