I need to replace my fiberglass tank with either plastic or aluminum. My boat is a 17' SSL 1987, the existing fits under the rear seat and I'll keep it rigged that way. Has anyone successfully switched over with the same model and configuration? If so I would really appreciate any and all feedback. When all is said and done, the tank will be up for grabs for those boaters who don't have ethanol in their supply.

I would not replace a fiberglass fuel tank with the same model. The only mass-produced tanks I know of are from MOELLER or from the engine manufacturers. To get better advice on possible replacement tanks it would be helpful if you mentioned the capacity of the tank you are seeking.

I think by "switched over with the same model and configuration" he meant "switched over with the same boat
model and interior configuration."

Chuck's right, I want to keep the same configuration as far as the under seat tank goes. No way do I want a fiberglass replacement. My existing is a Pate 24 gal. and it needs to go. Are the Moeller plastic tanks (model # 032525) a suitable replacemnt or would aluminum be a better choice?

Bob,
I also have a 17' SSL and replaced the 24 gallon Pate tank earlier this year. I went with a Moeller, 20 gallons or so. It's working fine so far, and fits properly under the rear hatch.

Bob,
as opposed to the Pate tank that could support some weight being placed on it. Is the Moeller more fragile or less rugged? Where did you purchase your Moeller ?

As far as supporting some weight, I would feel comfortable placing a fair amount of weight on it. I wouldn't hesitate to put an adult's weight (sitting) on it. That said, I haven't put any weight on it, nor do I recall putting any weight on the Pate tank I utilized for 9 years. All it all, I imagine it is somewhat less rugged than the Pate, but it only cost 20% of a Pate's price. I ordered my tank through West Marine, they had the best price in the Spring when I ordered it. Bob, I've got a brand new custom built aluminum tank brush finished with an epoxy coating. It is almost the exact measurements of my 15 gallon Pate, but taller. Still sits under the rear thwart and now holds 19 gallons. Overall width is like 42". Not sure what your set up requires. I can email pics of the installation of another tank painted and installed if you would like. zot.
