I have a customer who dropped off his 1976 Montauk 17 for a small Honda outboard repower. This boat has a narrow, shallow sump in the floor (rigging tube) just forward of the splashwell. My customer requested a bilge pump be installed here. Isn't this hull self bailing? What is the recommendation regarding drain plugs or scuppers on this hull? I appreciate the help. -David |

A lot of Montauk owners put small Rule bilge pumps in there with float switches. I had one on mine and it worked perfectly If left in the water with the plug out they will only take on so much water, so a lot of owners leave them at dock or on mooring with the plugs out. While they are self bailing when underway, some don't want the water there while at rest. With the plug in if you take some water over the transom it's a hassle pulling the plug running the boat to get the water out and then putting the plug back in once the water has drained, especially if you're by yourself. You can read an HTML version of the owner's manual for the classic Boston Whaler and its advice on hull drain tubes at http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/manual9-17/operations. html#drainTubes |

Pat and Jim, Thanks for your response. You addressed my customer's concerns fully. He will leave the plug out for now while docked and probably take he Rule pump option in the near future. -David |
