I'm looking at buying a 1976 AMF/Robalo. However, one of the things I noticed when looking at the boat was there are 2 pieces of stainless steel (one on the inside and one on the outside) on the transome.

I didn't notice any cracks on the transome (what I could see) howver, it appears the boat may have had a larger engine on it at one time (it currently has a 150 hp) I say this because there are two bolts extending out of the tramsome beneath the stainless bracket I've mentioned.

Are these AMF/Robalos prone to weak transomes and what is the best way to check this before I buy the boat?

I'll be taking the boat for a test run on Sunday and would appreaciate any help you can give me on this issue.

Thank you!

I had one that was also given the 'stainless sandwich treatment' because the transom had gotten soft. With the engine fully tilted up and locked, try holding the motor by the skeg and pushing up and down on it while you watch for flexing of the transom.

I have not seen one that was not soft.

In a rather strange coincidence, I was at Lockeman's Hardware and Boat yesterday, and they were working an OMC V6 on the transom of a Robalo, about a 18 or 19-footer. The boat initially looked to be in decent condition with a lot of nice wood trim, then a large crack in the hull laminate structure at the transom notch was pointed out to me.
