It was a rainy day today in The Netherlands so I took the opportunity to select a few short video clips of a local Boston Whaler Club event.

Great video Hans. Thanks for sharing. Where exactly on the coast did you take the shots? Looked like the sea was really confused that day. Was that a 17-ft Guardian in the beginning of the video? It sure didn't look like Montauk conditions to me hehe.

Pretty sweet video. I enjoyed the slow-mo cuts.

Hans:
Thanks for the video.
Is this the Atlantic Ocean? The seas were rough and somewhat confused.

Great stuff. Made me feel like I was there with you, Hans. Perfect music for this tape as well (who were the performers?).

Tony

I think the video was shot off Ijmuiden, about 25 miles west of Amsterdam. The harbor entrance looks familiar. My wife and I took a ferry from there to Newcastle-on-Tyne a couple of months ago.

Hans:

Thanks for the video. Looks like fun.

I'm going to have to get my 170 Montauk out on the ocean soon, I'm going through withdrawals.

Erik: The clips were taken between the Islands up north and IJmuiden. Two 17-ft Montauk 17 were part of the group and they performed well.

Gorji: This is the North Sea

Tony: Yes, correct the harbor is IJmuiden. The music is from Kahvi, a free download from ftp.scene.org - 'elektronik free art'

Warren: Have fun! 170 Montauk did also very well in those conditions

Tony: update on your music question: Performer is Workbench, and the album is Zoo. Free download: http://workbench-music.com/music/albums/zoo/

I enjoyed watching the video. Being quite familiar with video production, I noticed that the boat carrying the camera seemed to be running with excellent stability. Later I saw indications that the camera boat was a Boston Whaler REVENGE Walk-Through. Give more details about the camera boat, please.

I was impressed with the way the MONTAUK took on the head seas. There was one wave where the MONTAUK went quite high into the air, and I anticipated its bow would come down hard. However, the MONTAUK seemed to ride extremely well over that wave, and the bow came back down in a surprisingly gentle manner.

The sea state looked quite roiled and confused, as if there were a swell, some wind waves, and a strong current all interacting. It also appeared to be saltwater, and the amount of foam seems much greater than in freshwater. It is my observation that saltwater produces more foamy seas than freshwater.

Here's an early morning shot I took of the harbor entrance
from the Ijmuiden-Newcastle ferry : http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b309/elaelap/Newcastleferry028.jpg That distinctive lighthouse/channel marker was the giveaway. Very disorienting, by the way, for American sailors--it's "red, right, leaving" instead of "red, right, returning" in Europe; the green/black and red/orange buoys and markers are "on the wrong sides."

Holland and Belgium are must-visit nations for small boat enthusiasts--endless canals, rivers, harbors, marinas, and long, complex coastlines filled with a fascinating variety of commercial and recreational watercraft, most of which are kept in mint condition. And some of the finest small craft boathandlers I've ever seen.

Tony

Hmmm, it's early to think about dinner, but rijstafel and Belgian fries with mayonnaise sure sound like a plan, with Workbench as eine kleine nachmusic (and a couple of Heineken, Amstel, or Grolsch pale ales wouldn't hurt too much, either). Thanks again, Hans.

I thought the video clips were surprisingly good considering the sea state and speed and size of the camera boat.

I've been wondering about videoing some local sailboat races from my Whaler but have not bought a videocamera because of concerns about camera motion..

Hans, can you find out what make and model of camcorder was used? I suspect it had some sort of image stabilization.

Thanks, JimL

Hans, I'm also surprised how well the Montauk in the video handles. Do you have pictures of the event? Any more info about the 170 Montauk and how it handled in the confused sea?

Erik

Eric:

When you come to visit in Bodega Bay, you can test drive my 170 Montauk in confused seas. Hopefully it will be flat calm, but chances are that the water will be interesting. :-)

In my opinion the Montauk performed really well in those conditions, I was surprised. On the way back, the last part of the video, we had partly following seas and it was interesting to see that the classic hull performed very good.

Jimh: The camera boat is a Revenge WT 22 ft from 1989 with a Suzuki 225 HP engine. It handles very well in this kind of conditions.

Tony: next time when you are in Holland don't forget to warn me, depending on the weather we can go on the water or to the "rijsttafel" :)

JimL: The camera is a Sony DCR-PC7E camera. This is quite an old camera (bought it in 1996), one of the first digital camera's. It served me very well (till very recently) in the desert and on the water. I guess a modern, not too expensive digital camera will give at least the same quality.

Erik: Enough rainy days ahead, I will check my pictures and the rest of the videos.

Warren that sounds great!...but also a bit suspicious. It depends on what your definition of interesting is.:-) I wonder if Tony told you that you have built up a reputation over here. The pictures of your 32 mile fishing encounters with those giant calamari comes to mind. Also the Jet-ski salmon trolling pictures as well...
I have been through some rough confused seas before with my 170 Montauk (The Westerschelde inlet from the North Sea and the Med). Just looking for what others feel running in those conditions. The 170 Montauk is a great surfer in following seas.
Hans, how many of you guys participated there?

Erik

WT posted 09-14-2008 06:55 AM ET (US)     Profile for WT  Send Email to WT
Hans, we missed each other at the Golden Gate Bridge by about an hour the last time I ran from Sacramento to San Franciso in my 170 Montauk. Next time you come out, let me know if you would like to test drive my 170 Montauk around San Francisco Bay or Bodega Bay.

Erik, those pictures were fun offshore runs with other 170 Montauk owners and ContinuousWave forum members. CW member, fishinchips (Ken Jang) is the one that organized all those great runs for squid and tuna. Fishinchips is the one that should have the "reputation", he's been doing this for decades. I'm just a rookie.

It just goes to show you how great this website can be. I've met a lot of great guys/gals through ContinuousWave.

Hans, I emailed you from my main email account, I don't use Gmail much.

Perhaps we can open this up to get a few CW members for a mini-rendezvous in San Francisco Bay. We could possibly use this as a photo/movie opportunity with some other Whalers.

Stay tuned Whaler fans,

Warren

I'm in for the get-together, Warren and Hans. I'll await further info via email, WT. I'm heading down to the Bay today in my 15 to take photos of the Large Boat sailing race, weather willin'. Maybe I'll run into Rob/ratherwhalering down there, a true Whaler-sailor.

Warren this sounds like fun.

If my Verado gets fixed in time, I will try to juggle some things and join the flotilla with my Whaler and camera. The seabreeze out here on the coast has been half of its usual summer strength for the last few days. Maybe SF Bay will be a little less choppy.

Winds forecast 15-25 kts at the Golden Gate bridge this afternoon--should make for a good sailing race and a snotty ride in my little Whaler...what else is new this time of year in the Bay?

Absolutely great Bodega Bay forecast for the next five days, however. Maybe a meeting up there is indicated, eh?

And Jim, you know you're always welcome in my boat (which might be interesting with us two sorta jumbo-size guys if there's any lump).

JimL, my boat is in the shop too, I hope to get her back this week. You're right about the water conditions, it's been terrible the past 2 months.

No dates yet, but it may happen between September 20th through October 2nd. Most likely, the 20th and the 2nd will be out, due to travel arrivals and departures.

Looks like I better read up on how to take movies with my wife's camera. :-)

Just was booking my summer holiday to Spain. We are going to take the 19C Outrage II with Optimax 200 to Nautic Almata and camp there for a week or 3.

Just came across this post of our local group on the Northsea and enjoyed the nice video that Hans made of our event.

Hope you also can enjoy.

Thx, Jorgen

Nice video. I would describe those conditions as "sporty."

All in a day's work for a Whaler, though.

Thanks.

Enjoyable clip.
Looks like a fun filled run.
After viewing it I did a small walk around the Whaler here and can say that all is well.

Pete, to answer your question,

Our pricing is in EURO and it is at the moment just rased up to record level of EURO 1,75 per Liter.

1 Liter = 0.264172052637296 Gallons
1 Gallon = 3,785411779999999 Liter x EURO 1,75 = 6,624470614999998 Euro per Gallon.

Conversion today Euro to US Dollar is 1 EUR=1,268 US Dollar

So 6,624470614999998 Euro/Gallon x 1,268 = 8,399828739819997 US Dollar per Gallon

So basically to answer your question,.......
WE PAY 8,40 US Dollar per Gallon of regular fuel which contains 95 RON/ Octane.

WHOM IS ENTITLED TO COMPLAIN........

Jorgen
