Most of you will remember Hans Jacobs from the great North Sea Whaler video he recently posted at this website. Well, Hans--an IBM exec--and his lovely wife Denise are visiting northern California, and Warren/WT and I hooked up with them today for a San Francisco Bay tour. After a 36.5 mile run (in one hour twenty minutes!) down the Petaluma River, across San Pablo Bay, past Angel Island and Alcatraz, we picked up the Dutch visitors at the Gas House Cove fuel dock near Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco, me in my little 15CC and Warren in his Montauk 170. First thing we did, naturally, was take them out under the Golden Gate Bridge:

Then we checked out the S.F. skyline before heading over to Fort Point, Sausalito, and Sam's in Tiburon for breakfast. Here's a shot of Warren's boat with the Palace of the Legion of Honor--a famous tourist destination--in the background:

The weather in the morning was perfect, though it lumped up later in the day. This shows Angel Island on the right background as we head through unusually calm Racoon Straits:

Then we cruised along the financial district, past the Ferry Building, the Embarcadero, Fisherman's Wharf, and finally back to Gas House Cove, where we found the Coast Guard crowding the fuel dock with their big commercial division Whalers (what sort of motors are these, do you think?):

A final farewell from Denise and Hans--fine sailors and wonderful guests. We hope to see them again soon!

Here's a shot of Warren as we sped home up the Petaluma River. A fun day, with more photos to come from WT and from Hans and Denise (who shot another video during the trip):

Thanks for organizing this get-together, Warren, and thanks to Jim for this website, without which these kind of connections would never have happened.

That little 15 is truly a hot rod (31 mph @ 4700 rpm over the ground heading up against an ebbing tide, which was just about as fast as I wanted to go later in the day when it got a little choppy). Thanks for some fun pics, Warren. That first one is now my computer's wallpaper...beautiful photograph. A fine day all around, partner!

Great shots. This is what every Whaler owner probably wants, shots taken underway. It looks like a great time was had by all.

De wereld vrede kan worden bereikt. Dit is het bewijsmateriaal.

It's so much easier to view my pictures by clicking the "slideshow" button in my link.

Yep, we had a great time. Hans and Denise own a 27 Conquest, so riding around in our little Whalers must have seemed like riding around on a jet ski. :-)

The weather was great in the morning so the ride down from Petaluma and around San Francisco was very nice.

The ride back up was a bit of a challenge. Tony was airborne for most of the 36 mile ride back to Petaluma. But the smile on Tony's face said it all. (But he might not be smiling this morning!)

I'm still smiling, Warren, and thanks again for those great shots. Each photo in that last series seems to show my boat with only her AV plate in the water as we tore along through the chop in San Pablo Bay. Actually the little 15s are a softer ride in stuff like that than the classic 16'7" Whalers, I suppose because of their narrower beams, and my back is no worse than usual this morning.

That trip was the hardest workout I've given my 'new' boat since I acquired her six or seven weeks ago, including some trips outside Bodega Bay harbor into the lumpy open ocean and a couple of easier rides down to the Bay. I'm usually much more conservative (meaning 'slower') bouncing around in the sloppy stuff, but my fragile male ego just forced me to try to keep up with you--in other words, the devil made me do it ;-)

I continue to be very pleased with the performance of the 60 hp four stroke on that hull...seems to be a match made in heaven. When I called you via VHF and asked for your GPS speed (31 mph against the ebbing tide), I was spinning only 4700 rpm, with another 1100 turns available--yikes! And that's with the second-rate aluminum prop which came with the motor. By the end of the day my fuel consumption had dropped to a mere 9.5 miles per gallon--you'll remember that I topped up my tank at the end of our initial 36.5 mile run with less than three gallons, which seemed impossible but true, an amazing 12+ mpg in those calm early morning conditions, even averaging almost 28 mph on the way down. Damn, that's about the same mileage that my 245 hp 6 cylinder Tacoma used to get towing my Outrage 18 on her heavy twin axle trailer.

What fun!

Here's my new slogan, "Boston Whalers make you smile.".

MPG for our little Whalers were great. Like you, I was amazed that I got 7 mpg on the trip down and overall it was 6.2 mpg for the day. That's great mileage considering we didn't hold back.(Maybe the replacement of my collapsed fuel lines helped.)

We have to do this run again, soon.

Whoa. I have my new desktop image! Thanks Warren! That photo of Tony in the misty morning fog (laughing and a running, hey hey?) is spectacular. You should submit it to the photo contest to see if you can get some Penn Fishing gear.

Sounds like a great day of boating and some great fraternizing with our fellow Whalers from across the Atlantic. It is great to see that kind of thing continuing to take place all because of a silly little boat and a website!

Those first 4 shots of Tony that WT posted remind me of the Van Morrison song, "Into the Mystic". I think it speaks to the heart of every boater.

Yeah, lizard, but I got back 'into the mystic' for real at work today, that's for sure. You know, I spent a couple of weeks in Thailand earlier this year, right around the Thai New Year and Buddha's birthday celebration called Songran. I met an English-speaking monk at a wat--a Buddhist temple--I was visiting, who told me that he believed that there is a harmonious balance in the universe, that for every cold day in one's life there is a warm one, for every sorrow a joy, for every win a loss, for every loss a win. I don't know whether there's any truth to it, but after having an incredibly fun day yesterday, I was greeted with the following at my office today:

--An underemployed (Walmart) single mother of four youngsters who has just received a 60-day termination notice because the owner of her rental dwelling is being foreclosed upon. She's got no money, nowhere to go, no local family, and wants us to stop, or at least delay, the eviction;

--A guy who co-signed the loan for his foster son for the purchase of an expensive pick-up truck. The truck was vandalized and burned by persons unknown (purposefully, arsoned, get it?), and the guy's insurance company is trying to blame him and his kid for the loss; and

--A primarily Spanish-speaking restaurant worker whose boss told him he doesn't have the right to overtime pay because he doesn't speak English, and if he complains to the California State Labor Board the boss will make sure he gets deported.

--Then I got the news that crude oil prices spiked an all-time record $25+ per barrel, supposedly caused by our economic woes and the falling value of the dollar.

Yikes! Talk about balancing out a nice day, eh? And all pro bono cases, naturally...none of these folks (nor any of our other clients) can afford to pay a lawyer. What else is new?

Oh well, real life can't take away memories as good as yesterday's fun, and Buddhist, Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, pagan, or nothing at all, like me, we're dead a long, long time, so enjoy while you can, Whalers!

Tony--Better go boating again soon to balance the Ying and the Yang.

The Northern Pacific Railroad was my favorite line, due to their logotype.

After I told Warren and Tony that we would be in San Francisco it took only one e-mail to organize. 9am at Gashouse Marina, like making an appointment with a friend for a coffee in the morning. We arrived just before 9 and Tony and Warren were already waiting. I know the both of you had to get up early to give us a ride but it was only after looking at Warren's pictures that we realized how early you really had to get up for us.
When we met we immediately felt "at home" and it was like meeting old friends. We had a great ride to the Golden Gate, the Bay, Angel Island, Bay Bridge and an excellent breakfast (Crab Cocktail!) at Sam's Anchor Cafe which we truly enjoyed. This was an unforgettable experience, really the highlight of our trip! continuousWave is a great forum, besides all the advice and help I received here it also makes experiences like this possible.

Apart from the "Whaler Experience" and the touristic part of the trip it was really great to meet the both of you! Yesterday we arrived home safely after a trip to beautiful California and we are back in rainy Holland again, excellent weather to enjoy our pictures and video.

Guys, thanks again! It was a very special experience for us, both the scenery and meeting you guys!

Hi Hans and Denise:

It was a pleasure to meet the both of you too. I hope to be able to take both of you out on your next visit.

Here's a picture of what the water conditions can be like in San Francisco.
