I have seen topics on here where people have mentioned that there are gas fumes leaking out of their fuel tanks through the walls of the plastic tanks. Is it really true that the gasoline can actually permeate the walls of the tank?

My understanding is it is NOT fumes. It is the smell of gas or something in the gas. I have had a spark near the smell and (thank God) didn't have an explosion.

It is not just Whalers. I have a friend with a Crestliner that has a built in plastic tank. He has the same smell and also has had sparks from connecting electronics. No big bang for him either.

My Dauntless 14 is now 9 years old. I rarely smell the smelly smell of something that smells smelly. In other words I no longer get the smell. Not sure why. Maybe it is because I stabilize all my fuel and add Mercury Quickleen to every tank.

I've never experienced this. It could simply be that people are confusing the smell of plastic with the smell of gasoline. As plastic cures over time, it releases styrene into the atmosphere, which will give it a distinct smell for as long as several years. After a while, the styrene will all gas out, and the smell will go away.

Plastic is a hydrocarbon as is gasoline.

I would be concerned about leaks from fittings and hoses.
A pressure test would give real answers.

The gas of today doesn't smell like it did in the past. I think the toluene was what I liked about gas smell way back?
