Thanks to CW member Jeff Chamberlain for emailing me a link to this great video. While these guys are running a larger operation off larger boats in central California, urchin divers up here often use mid-size classic Whalers in their challenging work.

Halfway thru this video, the film maker quotes Henry David Thoreau: "Many fishermen go through their entire life without understanding that it isn't fish they're searching for." Enjoy!

That was pretty cool. I wonder what Urchin tastes like.

I worked briefly as a tender on an urchin boat out of Oxnard in the mid-70's. I never understood what the attraction was for urchin roe. Reminded me of salty phlegm. An acquired taste I guess.

WOW! Thanks for sharing Tony1 I am fairly sure I have not had urchin, even in the two years I spent in Japan.

Jeff sent me the link as well. This is a really fine short film, and definitely worth watching, regardless of your interest in urchin fishing. It also does a nice job of giving the viewer a glimpse into the beautiful central coast of California.

Great video Tony, thanks for sharing that. I also liked the music in the video.
When we are on vacation in Spain we always go diving for urchin. I don't like the taste but our French buddies they love them and eat them on the spot.

Erik,

When you visit this coming summer you and Matt/placerville can dive for urchins and abalone off 'Strike3'. Edie, Ria and I will stay on board, all cozy, warm and dry, and make sure the white sharks leave you guys alone.

As for eating the stuff...man oh man oh man. I'm such a wimp that I only eat California Roll and vegetarian sushi; none of that wild and crazy kind that my wife enjoys for me, thanks very much ;-)

I've had urchin roe quite a few times here in Atlanta, (believe it or not, Atlanta has some of the freshest sushi products as it is a major airshipping hub) and it is pretty tasty. It has a nutty flavor, something akin to sesame oil, or pecans. Great video Tony! -k
