What type [of trim tab is used on the Boston Whaler 230 DAUNTLESS]? I've never seen them before, it looks like they go straight down.

I haven't seen what you are talking about, but from your description it sounds like the Volvo QL tab system.

Yes they are. I just did a little more research on them. I think I like them better than conventional tabs. Its a lot more holes to drill though. I'm still looking for a manual for them.

The Volvo QL trim tab is described as being able to produce lift without producing as much drag as a conventional trim tab. If that claim is true, they would offer an advantage over conventional tabs. The Volvo QL trim tab also does not project aft from the transom very much, and that may be an advantage compared to conventional tabs if there is a restriction on the space available such as might occur if a swim ladder or boarding ladder were already in position on the transom.

Retro-fitting a Volvo QL trim tab system to an existing Boston Whaler boat may be difficult due to the constraints of their mounting and electrical system connectors.
