I'm looking to sell the SOURPUSS 13 and get something a bit more substantial. The replacement will also serve in replacement to a 24-foot Topaz, also being sold in the Florida location. Which is a better boat for use in both South Florida inlets and East End Long Island: a 1980 OUTRAGE V-20 or a 1990 OUTRAGE 18? I am lucky enought to [have] access to larger boats in both locations. Lose the 13-foot Boston Whaler and the 24 Topaz; gain Whaler 18 or 20.

While I like both models, I would go with the 18 Outrage. It has a better hull design than the V-20. The V-20 has a ride comparable to a Montauk.

Take a look at the reference article.

I did the North Channel 2008 in my 1978 V-20. There were two 18' Outrages along and they did better in sloppy water than I did. Gambler had trim tabs and Cicada did not. I was poorly trimmed, due to improper weight distribution, and had a hard ride. The V-20 is a bigger boat and has lots of room forward of the console, but tends to trim stern low. If you go with the V-20 seriously consider trim tabs or even a transom wedge so you can control the bow attitude.

Go with the Outrage 18. I owned a 1980 V-20, and yes it was like a classic Montauk ride. I had it on Lake Minnetonka, MN...lots of boat traffic with 2ft. chop and the ride was poor. The V-20 has a ton of space - loved it when anchored in a bay, but the ride quality made me sell it.

I forgot to mention that the V-20 has a lower console (especially the throttle position) height making it uncomfortable to stand upright...almost like the newer 170 Montauk. Another deal breaker for me. To me the standard 1990 Montauk/Outrage console has the perfect throttle/steering height.

That 1990 Outrage-18 represents the ultimate in refinement for a model that was quite popular to begin with.

You'll get full welded rails, the most current console of the era, potential teak detailing and a boat that is quite a bit newer than the 10 year older V20.

Here is my 1990 Outrage-18, aka Outrage-19 for that year's model:

The OUTRAGE V-20 hull has less deadrise than the OUTRAGE 18, which, as some have noted, may make the ride quality in head seas to be rougher. The flatter bottom may provide better efficiency, and the OUTRAGE V-20 might get better fuel economy (at least compared to another boat of similar size and weight). But, if you don't need the extra room of the larger boat, I think the OUTRAGE 18 is a better choice. I have often thought that if I were to get a second boat, I would get an OUTRAGE 18.

Can't speak for the 20', but I had an 1991 18 and it was a great boat.
