Today I was doing some desktop icon cleaning and before I deleted this picture that I took in late spring of 2008 in a Home Depot parking lot, I questioned two things about this boat. First was that this 2007 or 2008
11 footer was powered by a Yamaha and not a Mercury. My conclusion is that the boat can be bought without a engine. The second was what Affiliated Researchers were doing in our area. A lot.

I've seen a couple late model whalers around here with Yamaha's as well.

The Whaler dealer swears they won't sell a whaler without an engine. I think those I have seen with Yamaha power were switched out by the owner, but I cannot confirm that.

I think the 11 foot hull is the only boat you can buy without an engine. You buy it as a tender model, and then add the engine of your choice.

Jerry, got this from their site regarding what they were doing in Toledo Ohio. It is listed as one of their recent accomplishments:

"Bathymetric Survey and Sub-Bottom Profiling of 8.8 River Miles of the Ottawa River, Toledo, Ohio."

Outside of CPD hulls, the 11 is the ONLY Whaler offered standard with NO engine. The sport model is an exception which comes with a 25hp Mercury standard or a 15hp as an option.

Government agencies can buy a Whaler any way they want through GSA (General Services Agency). I suspect this one was.

Affliliated Researchers is not a government agency.

Besides the 11 foot hull, all Whalers arrive at dealerships with a Mercury motor rigged on the transom.

I drove my new Whaler off the dealer's lot with the motor of my choice, but it cost me an extra $2,000. The dealer, who is a friend, sold the Mercury that came on my boat on the side.

So, if you want to spend a little more money and have a flexible dealer to work with, a new Whaler can be purchased with a motor other than a Mercury.

Client must have been impressed by the whaler. We use Monarks.

Mercurys from 30 hp down are Tohatsus, not really Mercs. Here is a shot of my 2008 Tohatsu Merc on my 13 footer.

Frisco-

Good looking rig. Why the jackplate?

I'm sure the post-classic 13s are great, functional boats, but check out the photograph of frisco pete's sweety, compare it with the shot of the Affiliated Researcher's craft, and tell me which one is a true Boston Whaler and which one resembles a $1500 West Marine dinghy...or a bath tub. And now they're making them (and the 15s) with Gawdawful huge pastel topsides decals, just to make absolutely sure nobody mistakes them for real Whalers.

Here's a simple test: Ask yourself which boat you would choose if you won a fantasyland giveaway contest--a showroom-condition newly repowered classic 13 or a new one with the same motor.

Oh well, the unfortunate design change just increases the value of Rich's beautiful boat (and my 1987 15 Center Console as well), and chacon a son gout for them as likes the new ones.

Nice shot of that 11'.

Whaler used to be a boat company selling boats with the prerig of your choice, than along came Brunswick and dictated that Whaler was to package the boats with the Mercs. Now of course with the trailer also.

It is impossible to purchase a blank hull from Whaler unless it's CPD or Euro-pein. I have tried for years to get a new 285 but no go, so my next ones an Intrepid.

Mumbo, Why the jackplate? Well, I actually built it to use on my race boat, but I felt it wasn`t heavy enough for a 75hp motor, and by putting it on the 13 footer, it gives me better access to the fishing rods that set in the rodholder mounted behind the splashwell. I can`t say it gives me better performance, and there is little difference in speed with the different transom heights I have tried, but it will run 30 mph gps with the `08 25 Merc which was the same speed I got from the `58 Evinrude Lark 35hp which was just clamped to the transom.

Tony, thanks for the kind words.

Here are pictures of the interior when I first built it 3 years ago. It is just sitting in the unfinished boat.
