So I have been searching for a bigger boat, and have come across several boats. Now I have found a Revenge 25' WT 1988, at a low price.

My goal would be to get the boat, keep the engines, have some repairs done by professionals, and everything else by myself. I don't want to not spend more than $15K for the entire lot.

And I was hoping for some opinions on the boat in general. And some opinions on the complexity (and cost) of definite repairs in need.

Definitely in bad shape, I know that. Here are the basics:

1) The engines (Evinrude 150's 1993) are pretty used 1115 hrs. The engines started up just fine (after 4 months of sitting), smoked as usual, compression on the cylinders varied quite a bit 80 psi to 95 psi (one was 75 psi). (From what I have found, a new block should have ~120 psi.) Starboard trim/tilt is leaking and rusting (going to need a new motor, and cylinder assembly).

2) Skeletal remains of a tuna tower are on the boat. Not worth much in the PNW, so it will come off. Likely have the holes patched by pro's.

3) No navigational electronics, not even depth sounder. (This is fine, I'll get something new.)

4) Hull structure. Two area's of concern: Under the starboard engine there is a crack that runs across the upper edge / top of the transom (athwart ship). It is only under the starboard engine, and doesn't appear to be a stress crack, more like a "green line" type crack. Second, the aft port quarter has a big "crunch" and exposed wood. Luckily, not structural, but exposed wood is not easy.

5) Electronics. Probably going to need a lot of new wiring. Trim tabs need replacement. Anchor windlass actually works. Batteries had enough juice to tilt, and start the motors, maybe a year left on them.

6) Interior. The flooring has all been heavily caulked in place. Likely going to have some water around the tank. All the vinyl is roughed up. The head liner is toast, and would need professional re-do. (How much to do this?)

7) Trailer is the best part of the boat, but useless to me.
I have a boat house to store the boat while I replace/repair stuff.

Any other ideas would be welcome.

Thanks

I'm sure more knowledgeable folk than I will chime in soon enough.

Two thoughts:

Could that be a t-top skeleton rather than a tuna tower?

Casey McCann has a Revenge 25 that he did a beautiful job on. I believe that he didn't replace the shot headliner, just removed it. I've seen his boat and it looks great. If I recall correctly, he has stated that he has no trouble with condensation on the smooth cabin ceiling.

Everything depends on price. 120 is not the norm on a fresh V6 OMC, more like 100 maybe even less. 1100 hours is not bad and shows they have been reliable.

That's the boat up on Whidbey at Oak Harbor. It has been on and off of Craigslist for months now. I have not seen it in person but have some high resolution photos of it that Gary Creasey sent me and my impression was that it had been rather abused in its life.

That is a *serious* project and I think a budget of only $15,000 is woefully inadequate.

Given that the seller is offering for almost nothing, you could argue that it is a good deal, but you must understand what you are getting yourself into.

Caveat emptor.

Yes the Whidbey Island boat is indeed a project and then some, but I am not going for a total restoration. I am hoping to get to a high level of functionality and moderate aesthetics. It may take a summer to get their too.

Yes the boat has been ridden rough. Generally neglected, as there is standing water in places you don't want them. It had NY #'s I think, and likely had a past life as a play toy. There are stress cracks in a few concerning areas; but most sourced from the tuna tower (which has been defrocked).

Maybe the boat for $7K-$8K, and spending $7K-$9K, to get functionality back to usable. Which I generally don't like spending money on tangible items such as trim tabs, and VHF's.

Boat (and trailer): $8,500
Sell trailer: ~$1,500
Wiring and Batteries: $800
Navigation Equip.: $2,500 (GPS, Sonar, VHF)
Headliner: $1,000-$1,500 (Headliner and vinyl, by someone)
Engines: $600 (new trim/tilt on Port, by mechanic)
Cosmetic Patch Work: $1,500 (by someone)
Trim Tabs: $500
Canvas: ~$1,500 (by someone)

Everything else I could do, but still would have to pay for parts and equipment.

Man hours: A whole lot of weekends that I don't have...

Or I could wait around and find a Grady, or similar. Which seems to be the smarter thing to do. I am in no hurry, I am finishing up on other projects, and will have an empty boathouse come summer.

Did you look at the Revenge 22 on Whidbey? The one with the fire hose doo-hicky?

Hey Kwick,

I can appreciate the potential within this unit.
The thing is if considering picking her up.
As stated before,
I wouldn't be in a hurry to do it all at once unless you are planning to trow a lot of money at it.
Seems to me like a nice project to take your time and practice your hand at doing it all.
The cheaper the sale price the sweeter the deal would be.
I am a bit concerned about the outboards though..

The Revenge 22' with the fire nozzle and pump is a piece. I never looked at it. I am looking at W/T with the smaller hatches to port and starboard. Or a full walk around, of some sort, they pop up here and there.

And that Revenge has been on CL for a few months. Not going anywhere soon either.

The Revenge 22 with the fire pump is being sold by Ben Reams (CW user name neb_2000) who is also the Harbor master at Langley. He has been trying to sell it since last summer.

Of course it did not help that he had it listed for several months as a 1973 model. One of the worst marketing jobs I have seen in a while. I should call him and give him a hard time ;-)

I'll had considered buying this boat back about four or five months ago. I ended buying a 25 outrage for 5 grand down in the san francisco bay area. If the deal fell through with the outrage I was driving up to washington. If the motors run and are sound its a good deal. you can play while you fix. if you end up having to put motors on it then thats another problem. I was lucky since i know of a good machainc down here that finds and fixes used motors. many times he has used parts to get them running to get use out of them. just my two cents.
