I have a 1988 BW 11' SS with a new 20 hp Honda and a 6 gallon gas tank. I'm considering installing a couple of custom davits on the back of my house boat to hang the BW so it is out of the water. Figure it's 500 pounds with fuel and battery. I can't put it on chocks as there is no room on the stern. Any thoughts?

The vast majorety of 11 foot Whalers that I've seen were hung from davits and used as tenders. There are at least two in my harbor hanging off the back of trawlers. Is your question about a specific davit system, or is it about the utility of the Sport 11 as a tender? If the mothership can handle the load, I think it would be a nice enhancement. |

Look into the Sea-Wise system. Having the boat hanging off the stern from the lifting eyes 24/7 is not ideal for several reasons. First, it's a lot of stress on those eyes. Second, if the drain plug clogs for any reason, and you get some rain, it will become a LOT of stress on those eyes; too much, most likely. Third, unless you spend a fair amount of money on multiple stand-off brackets, it represents a pretty significant danger back there as it swings around. And lastly, it effectively extends the length of your boat by 5', making it that much harder to maneauver in tight moorages. |

I am in the process of doing this right now. i bought a Nick Jackson #1000 davit system, another popular one is Roskelly Olson, check out both of their web sites. There are 6 11' Whalers on davits in my marina, my dad had one he hauled to Alaska and back twice on a davit. Before blow up boats this was the the dinghy to have and still is considered the best by a lot of boaters. I couldn't find a nice one so I bought a junker and restored it with Interlux 2 part paint, a new rub rail and a mint 28spl Johnson.Dan |

Question...did you change the lower unit or use a jackplate because all 28spl's were 20" shaft electric start models with the older styled lower unit. |

The 28s had a 5" spacer to make them 20", the guy I bought the motor from removed it and made it a 15" but now I have run into another problem, the engine mount/clamp is not like a 20 or 25, it's the larger mount from the bigger engines and the steering linkage hits the sides of the transom. I saw one that had a notch cut in the transom but I would rather not do that as I just finished painting the boat. Got the new rub rail and Starboard hatches done today and the boat looks amazing.Dan |
