On several occasions in the past, in the course of discussions about the Environmental Protection Agency imposing emission limits on outboard motors and limiting the sale of non-compliant outboards motors, there has been commentary that the total contribution of emissions from outboards was small in comparison to other sources from vehicles and trucks, and particularly large diesel trucks. In this regard, I was quite surprised to discovery just recently that the EPA has also undertaken regulation of the emissions from the diesel engines in railroad locomotives. In a manner similar to outboard motors, the EPA has imposed regulations which limit the emission levels from new railroad locomotives, with a increasingly strict emission limit as time goes on. As a result, there has been a significant re-engineering and re-design of railroad locomotives to reduce the emissions from their diesel engines and meet the EPA regulatory limits. I was not aware that the regulatory scope of the EPA was so broad and that they had targeted so many other industries besides automobiles and outboard motors.
