Which Whaler hull design from 1980's thru 2000 in 20- to 24-feet range gives the best rough water ride? Any thoughts or opinions?

1987 22' Outrage. Crossed the Gulf Stream several times in this boat, she tracks and handles like a dream. Janis |

Janis is right. The classic 22' Outrage is the best. Alain |

More mass is almost always always going to mean a smoother ride.If you are going to restrict the choices to 20-24 feet models made form 1980 to 2000, then the Outrage/Justice 24 will offer perhaps the smoothest ride of all. As much as I love the classic 22, the 1994-1998 Outrage 24 is a much larger boat and has a superior ride. |

While I have never been on a 24 I owned a 22' Outrage and I have to say it was one hell of a boat and performed like other boats I have been on that where at least 4' longer. However, my Father has a 22' Guardian and the ride difference between the Guardian and the Outrage was night and day. The Guardian eats up a 2-3 chop with ease while running in the mid - upper 30's. The hull has an even more solid feeling than the outrage when crashing through the seas. My Outrage had a single 235 Evirude with a 77 gallon tank while the Guardian has a 129 Gallon tank with twin 150 Mercs. That added weight along with the extra glass lay up I am sure helps a lot. The weight marked on the trailer for airlift/transport is 6450lbs total combinded. I know the trailer weighs in at 2000lbs so the hull, motors, top, and full fuel is 4450 lbs or so. |

If you like the ride of a classic OUTRAGE 22 hull, try the Whaler Drive version. As far as I can tell, the classic 22-foot Boston Whaler hull with Whaler Drive has the highest length-to-beam ratio of any of the Boston Whaler boats in the 20-foot to 27-foot range. A narrow boat often produces a better ride into head seas. |

I have been aboard Bruce G's (Newport ME) Outrage 22WD and it was fantastic. Especially in snotty conditions. In looking at the specs, under Reference, I can see why, it has a a LOA of 24'3". |

Actually, the Classic 25' Outrage edges out the Classic 22' Outrage for the best Length-to-Beam ratio.22' Outrage LOA - 24.17' Beam - 7.42' LTB Ratio - 3.26 25' Outrage
LOA - 26.50' Beam - 8.00' LTB Ratio - 3.31 |
