Looking for some general input from the expertise of the forum. Boat is a 15' Dauntless (year 96) with a 50HP Johnson (year 00). Boat is perfect for the family shooting over to the beaches across the Moriches Bay (wife and two daughters) and even better fishing with a buddy or two. Last couple of years the engine has been giving me problems. Last year had to replace wire harness due to corrosion, occasionally has a tough time starting and this year the power Trim/Tilt went out on me. The replacement value on a new TT is about $1,000 parts only. The rebuilt ones I see around for about $500 look as bad as mine is now. I am concerned about putting another $1-$1,500 into this engine when it hasn't always been the most reliable but seems like a very young engine to replace. The boat is docked in salt water and has always been properly winterized during my estimated 5 years of ownership. Like to keep the boat for another 4-5 years and perhaps a new engine might be a wise investment. Just can't seem to decide. Been looking at the new E-Tec, Suzuki, Honda, etc. but can't decide which would be the best fitted for my use and easiest mount due to the non-standard bolt pattern (hence the reason for not using a CMC plate to replace tilt trim.) Don't need a power house, just something powerful enough to handle the chop on a windy day in the moriches inlet.

Sorry to ramble on. Looking at new outbboard brochures and ebay for used parts still hasn't helped me make a responsible decision.

Any thoughts, comments, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

2000 50hp has to have a standard bolt pattern. Worst case is a blind hole install which is easy to fix with a jackplate or CMC PT-130.

I'd go with a 50 or 70 HP Yamaha 2-stroke.
Lightweight, powerful, good fuel economy and, I think, the best quality outboard there is.
And there are some very good deals out there on these motors.
