Well, being cognizant of the fact that aside from Jimh, there is a huge Michigan contingent on C.W., good luck to Michigan State in the NCAA tournament. My Gators got knocked out of the N.I.T. (Nobody Cares Invitational Tournament), so I don't have a dog in the hunt. I have a good friend from Michigan that hosted my family on a vaction to Leland, MI. Therefore, I'll root for Michigan State. Good Luck.

Good stuff, Sparty love from Florida. We'll take it!Another couple of wins would be very welcome in many ways around here. Now if ESPN would just quit their whining and crying about the event being held in Detroit... Whaler content is abundant. I've heard reports that Tom Izzo has a summer home in the Grand Haven area, it's likely that he's often very near, or at least within sight of, numerous Whalers. Coach Izzo is also a fellow alumnus of Northern Michigan University in Marquette, another great Whalering area. |

Actually, I think that it's great that the game is in Detroit. Have you seen the amount of fans in the bleachers in most of these tournament games? I'd guess maybe 30-40% capacity and that's being very generous. So, it's in Detroit. Then they can fill the stadium, the local pubs, restaurants and other businesses can get a much needed shot in the arm. It's all good. I see no down side to that. Detroit could use something positive like that. ESPN always needs something to cry about. |

Jim Calhoun, the coach of the University of Connecticut Huskies (my alma mater), is a Boston native. Enough said. |

the problem with the event being in the Detroit area is the amount of negative press the area will get from media types who feel a need to talk about the failing infrastructure, the bad roads, the rotting houses and buildings. At this point in the game of floundering economics, it is best to NOT put Detroit or Michigan under a media microscope. |

John, Your comment brings to mind one of my all time favorite move lines. A classic Clint Eastwood film, Kelly's Heroes (1970), Donald Sutherland, as the character Oddball: "Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves? Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here? Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?" |

Mr. Brian7sonPlease don't get me wrong. I don't view Michigan in those terms at all. My comment was an opinion based on how I've seen the media react to this situation in the past. I've no reason to believe this will be any different. I feel this is especially true in light of the last two days political activities as relate to the auto industry, these events have upped the wattage of the light bulb in the microscope. Detroit has become the poster child for urban decay. It is easy to send a photographer through the streets and capture dramatic images. Showcasing this next to the glitz and glamour of a major sporting event is the media way. I'm afraid that realism prevents me from taking oddball's approach. (and, that is one of my favorite movies, "Burning Bridges" will be my ear worm for the rest of the day!) |

The point of this entire post was to simply wish Michigan State good luck. I think that roughly 50% of the C.W. members here live there. When Moose reminded me that the event was being held in Detroit, I figured "good for them". They could use a lift. Maybe it will pump a little money into the local economy. Usually, having the NCAA national championship game in your city will generate a few million in income for local businesses. That was it...period...end of story. No politics, no doom and gloom, etc. There's plenty to get depressed about. That's not where I was going, nor where I want to go. You started the gloomy stuff, so I decided to kid around with you. |

John10,No gloomy stuff out of me, I was just pointing out ESPN's gloomy views. I'd agree that the focus is on Detroit as the poster child. But, anyone who takes a short drive in a major American city will find many blocks of buildings and homes that look like that bank after it took the 88mm round through the front door from the Tiger Tank when Kelly and the guys were liberating the gold. Detroit, and it's metro area, has been a very successful host of a long list of major events over the past 4-5 years. I went to more than a few of them and I found them all well run, safe and fun. The majority (certainly, not all) of the reviews from the national media that I found were positive. Not sure if there is another metro area that would be able to match this list in either quanity or quality. The Stanley Cup Championship and a trouble free parade Super Bowl XL The World Series The MLB All Star Game The Ryder Cup NBA Finals, two years in a row, and a trouble free parade CCHA Hockey Championship yearly Regional round of the NCAA Hockey Championship Regional round of the NCAA Mens Basketball Championship Motor City Bowl yearly Indy Racing League on Belle Isle And, I'm probably missing a few others. I'm not knocking any other metro areas, just pointing out some positive stuff about Detroit. Go Spartans! |

Well, they made it to the big dance! Now they gotta beat UNC. That's not going to be easy. Maybe they'll get enough help from the 6th man (home crowd) to pull it off. |

Well winter returned today to Detroit. 4-6 inches of wet slushy snow and cold temps. Hopefully it will put an ache in the bones for Carolina. I really hope State wins. I am not a State lover but, it is likely to be the only time we will ever see the "Home Team" win a championship in Ford Field. |

Sorry Brian! Couldn't get to Detriot so I did the next best thing and went to Chapel Hill to watch the game with my daughter, UNC senior, and her friends. Great game, and great party downtown in the streets. Detroit a great job hosting the event.Jeff |
