For about the same money, which of the following boats would be preferable and why. --1978 Sport 15 in good condition, needs buffing, hull looks very good not sure if it has any waterlogging problems, 1988 70 hp Yamaha decent galvinized trailer all being sold by a dealer. --2001 130 Sport with 25 hp Bigfoot Merc with galvanized trailer and bimini all in very good condition. These two are offered at about $5,000. What are y'all's thoughts? Thanks in advance. Jaybird4

A 130 Sport with a 25hp...anything more then just you in the boat it will struggle. 40hp is the best choice for that boat. |

15 without a doubt unless you want to be confined to low 20's and only carrying 1 person with ya. That 15 will scream and get pretty decent mileage with the Yamaha. |

Thanks for the replies. I was thinking that the Bigfoot motor would be a bit more responsive and better on the top end than that. That 15 foot classic design sure has some clean lines. Jaybird4 |

The new 130 weighs about 75-lbs more than the classic 15. How do you think a 15 would perform with a 25 on it ;) |

Part of the question needs to be what it will be used for. My brother has a 13 with a 40 which he uses on a small lake with many weedy and shallow areas--perfect. I own a 15 with a Evinrude 70hp (great combo). Great boat, performs like a sports car. I have seen on this web site the 15 being called the most versatile whaler and I can see why despite my lack of experience with bigger whaler |

The Sport 15 has some clean lines... I don't know how long you have been around Whalers but for me, the more I see, the longer I own them my appreciation for the classic boats soars. I don't know of a small boat that looks as absolutely fine as a Classic 15. I spent part of a day in a 130, a nice, comfortable boat for sure. However, for my money the 15 wins hands down. Performance, ride, looks, Whaler wood (easy to maintain) - no question. The Whaler geeks have commented on this forum there is no better 15 foot boat on the planet. Get the 15. |

Thanks all, In a few minutes I will be making the call to the dealership with an offer for the Sport 15. Pete, I have owned a 95 13 Dauntless new, a 16 ventura that was 4 years old and a 3 year old 150 Sport. I liked the 150 Sport w/60 bigfoot the best. My daughter is getting married next week and I needed some of the money I got from selling the 150 to pay for the wedding. I have a little left over and it is "burning a hole in my pocket" for the Sport 15. Stay tuned...Jaybird4 |

I certainly hope your daughter appreciates your sacrifice! I love the 15 CC. But then this was the only model for me as it was the largest I could fit in the garage. |

The Sport 15 ROCKS! I thought the 150 sport was responsive, but this thing with the the 70 Yammie is unbelievable. I guess I got a dry hull, hope so. I have a little project work to do now, but it sounds kinda fun. Thanks guys for all the help....Jaybird4 |

Wow - Whaler V Wedding. At least you have something left. When my stepdaughter announced she was getting married we offered her $2,000 cash on the spot if she agreed to NOT get married. Nice guy, young love but bad match for sure. She persisted, we stood firm and she financed her own wedding. A couple years later when she was on track for her MBA and he was working out his career in Fantasy Football and video game competition, she financed her own divorce. Chapter in the book. She pulled off High Honors in her undergrad and is now at University of Michigan doing her MBA and her employer (major US bank) is paying for most of it. She has another "athlete" now; a Frisbie Golf prodigy. She has learned something for sure: the new guy loves to fish and is into boats which rubbed off I guess from us. This summer she says "we're buying a bass boat...." Great kid, remarkable actually. Drove us nuts for a long time....We still have the $2,000 incentive money in reserve, just in case Good luck, get a cool boat - does your new son-in-law fish? boat?

Yeah one of the first few times I met my future Outlaws I saw a pic of his 25 SeaRay Sundancer and forgetting I said to him "Nice SeaPig!" They paid for the wedding anyway. |

Pete, Yes he has a 15' Scout with a 60hp Johnson 4 stroke, the boat is side console. They have been dating for the past 2.5 years and I think this one will work out fine..Thanks Jaybird4
