I've been up since the crack of dawn not because I'm an early riser but because my body was in so much pain. The pain was directly linked to a fabulous day of boating and fishing yesterday. :-)

The Strike3 partnership was out for yesterday's rock cod opener. Tony, Matt and I ran from Bodega Bay north as far as the Gualala River (45 miles). The weather and water conditions were as good as you'll ever get in Northern California. We caught limits of very high quality rock fish and Matt got his limits of abs too.

But this is what I find almost too good to be true. We averaged 5 miles per gallon! We covered 101 miles and left our main motor on continuously for the 11 hours. We topped off the fuel in the morning and topped it off with only 20 gallons when we returned.

Our 21 foot one-of-a- kind Revenge-like Boston Whaler loaded with fishing gear, 3 fishermen, at least 200 pounds in the ice chest (we couldn't lift the ice chest over the gunnel) getting 5 miles per gallon?

Maybe these classic flat bottom Whalers are pretty fuel efficient.

Another incredible Whaler day!! Our old boat, powered with a four stroke Suzuki 140 with 730 hard-used hours, blasted downhill about 30 miles at the end of the day without pause, that part of our trip taking just about exactly one hour. The seas were as smooth as they get in our area, and I was able to steer (or not-steer) for minutes at a time without touching the helm. I kept the turns between 46-4800, and our old girl just hummed along at 29-30 mph. A great ride to finish a wonderful partnership fishing trip, and I was as amazed and delighted as Warren and Matt when we filled up at the fuel dock and discovered that we had only burnt 20 gallons of gas to cruise over 100 miles (and to idle at 700 rpm while drifting and while Matt was diving for many hours...we didn't turn off the motor all day, except once briefly when its intake was covered with kelp). Truly remarkable, and it says good things about our boat/motor combination.

You know, I'm not a religious guy, but it being Sunday and all, here is my chapel, here is my church:

Enjoy your Whalers, folks. We are truly blessed.

Let's try that shot of Matt taking an abalone one more time:

Nice trip guys. I was out for my first ride on a 170 Montauk out of HMB in Ken Jang's (fishnchips) boat. Nice smooth ocean but fishing was very slow for us. Took us all day to round up limits for 6 (we were buddy boating).

The 170 was pretty darn cool. Lot wider than the old Montauk and rode smoother too, though there wasn't much anything to deal with out there yesterday.

littleblue, we did great except for ling cod. While we caught a bunch of ling cod, Matt got the only keeper.

Let's hope the larger ling cod start showing up soon,

Here's one of my fishing holes. The closest boat launch is either around 35 miles north to Point Arena or 40 miles south at Bodega Bay.

The closer to the rocks the better the fishing. Also, the further you are away from any other boats, the better the fish. That's why I travel 30-50 miles in search of virgin fishing grounds. :-)

Another stellar day with the buds. Warren put us on some of his hot spots that Tony and I can never find on our own.

Littleblue, Fishinchips and all you other Norcal CWers should trailer up to Bodega and join us one of these perfect weather days. There was a Striper(the boat not the fish) rendevous going on yesterday and we were feeling outnumbered.

Wow, great pictures guys. They look like post-cards.
I think one of the reasons they designed the post-2002 Montauks the way they did was to match the fuel efficiency of the first Outrage-type hulls. I have always thought there were similarities between these hulls.

Love to join you guys up north sometime. Working to get a new trailer right now, damn things are expensive.

Kind of sad we have to travel 20+ miles away from port for a good RF hole. 10-15 years ago I used to be able to go out the gate and get a steady pick along the entire coastline just past the bridge. Today I have to motor 15+ miles.

My 19 with 115 gets about 6mpg at cruise, not sure about per tank. I did over 100 miles this week and she took a whopping 19 gals.

That's about what I was getting with my 1988 Outrage 18 and her Yamaha F115, Nick. Pretty amazing, eh? But how about my not-so-new-to-me-anymore 15 Sport CC/F60 Yami? Twelve miles per gallon (!), witnessed by my boat partner Warren/WT, on a swift 80+ mile run down the Petaluma River, all the way across S.F. Bay, and return after taking some Dutch visitors cruising. Damn, I've had cars and trucks that don't do as well, at least city driving.

We were sure pleasantly surprised with our "mileage" on this last trip. We usually use the kicker a great deal of the time, but the way things worked out we employed our main motor almost full time on this trip. And our boat was just about as heavily loaded as she's ever been, with all kinds of extra gear, a huge new ice chest, and our three fuel tanks topped off at the fuel dock right before we left. Very, very good news, with gas prices drifting up again (a little over three bucks per gallon here in northern Calif) and the rock fishing season just open.

Got out Saturday with my nauset, not as good a fishing day but boy were the conditions great.

We made it to salt point and ran around there, got home with about 20 gallons burned. Had it up to about 30 for a good prtion of the run home, but throttled back to about 25 for the majority of the run home. A much smoother ride home than expected.

The old 88SPL ran like a champ, but she does suck some fuel.

I have that same outboard on my 18 Outrage. I'm continually amazed how much my mileage varies when conditions change - more than any other engine I've owned. I'll get as little as 3.75 mpg and as much 6 mpg depending on seas and load.

Tony my 17' w/70 suzuki would get about 10. My 13' w/40 Suzuki gets about 10 just because the cruise speed is so much slower due to being a 13'. If I was on a glass river/lake I bet I could get 13 or so at cruise. The 115 is a tropper though and my loads are usually 4-5 Adults, coolers, gear and a full tank. Even with that I only lose like 3mph at WOT, amazing torque they have.
