I just wanted to take some time, before I leave on vacation (okay, collective "whew" from the peanut gallery!) to say how proud I am to live in America. This holiday, I'm thankful for the freedoms that we have and the ideals that this country represents...and though it can be uncomfortable at times, I really do appreciate that we can be free do disagree with one another on nuts and bolts of things, yet agree wholeheartedly on the concept and ideal that this country has come to represent. We have our differences, and our challenges, but few can deny the great good that this crazy country has brought to the world. - and along with it some colorful characters! Happy Birthday America. May your freedom continue to shine for those who are living under oppression of all stripes, and may your good fortune and kind heart find a way through the difficult waters that we're currently in. I'll fly the flag proudly from my Whaler this week. Cheers. Dave |

Right on, Dave. I'm amazed and very proud of my nation to see its ethical growth over my relatively short lifespan. My mother and father were both born before women had the right to vote in national elections in this country. I was 20 years old before Jim Crow laws were outlawed. When I went to college, only seven or eight percent of the professional graduate school students were women--now at least half of the law school and medical school graduates are women. Gay folks were routinely arrested just for existing when I was a teenager. There were essentially no Latino legislators at that time in the state of California, even though Los Angeles had a Spanish-speaking population second only in size to Mexico City; now the mayor of Los Angeles is a Latino, and a person with a Spanish-speaking background is about to become a justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. And let's not forget the most important breakthrough of them all, one that I never thought I'd see in my lifetime: the election of an African-American as president of the United States. Whatever you think about his politics, Obama's election proved that the majority of the people in this nation could finally look past the evil idiocy of racism and choose a president on that majority's belief about his merit, leadership qualities and intelligence. An incredible, historic event, and one that has me raising my American flag even higher this year. Happy Birthday, USA! Tony |

Also, John Adams(2nd pres) and Thomas Jefferson(third pres) died on the same day, July 4th 1826, exactly fifty years after both signed the Declaration of Independence. President James Monroe died on the 4th of July 5 years later. rich/Binkie |

Two books I have read recently, "John Adams" and "A Team of Rivals" (Abraham Lincoln's political life) and the book I am currently reading, "Ben Franklin", have reinforced my outlook on this wonderful country. I recommend reading about the birth of the nation and it's growing pains through it's adolescent years to everyone. Sure, this country has it's problems, but as both early and recent history has proven, none that cannot be overcome with time and perseverence. I love this country. Happy Birthday to all! Thank you, |

Just got of our own celebration on the first.. And it was a dilly. Bands, fireworks and beach log fires and sunny barbecues. The Beer was Ice and the wine was Red and soothing. The sun was showing strength in sharing of his warmth on our skin until nine and it was a truly Grand Day. May the fourth be just as rewarding to You All. Check out these photos of the appropriately-named USS Independence. She looks something like a 417-ft early classic cathedral-hulled Whaler (if you've got a coffee-fueled imagination like mine this morning, that is): http://thetension.blogspot.com/2009/07/ photo-essay-us-navys-new-littoral.html Shallow draft, capable of 60 knots...all she needs is desert sand gelcoat and a blue interior. Transam, Lest you forget liberals are Americans too. Why don`t you ease off. (At lease he left out abortion and religion from his rant) Our founding fathers new nothing about abortion, but I`m sure they wouldn`t want the government to control it, As far as religion the Amendments that they wrote assured that this country would not be controlled by a particular religion, no matter how hard you folks try to change that. Enjoy your holiday, and be grateful you live in a country that has religious freedom. rich/Binkie |

My "flaming liberal rant," deconstructed: I said I'm very proud of my country because, Pretty radical stuff to be talking about on the eve of our nation's celebration of its revolutionary birth, eh? Sure sorry my comments ruined your Fourth, T.A. and others. Not really too sorry, however...I can't help it if expressing my love for my country offended your thin skinned, cranky souls. But I'm not looking for an argument here. As I said, and as I say again, I'm full of pride for my country, and I wish the USA a very, very happy Independence Day. Tony Hey--what did some of you guys used to say? If you don't like the way things are going, leave. That's right, those old obnoxious right wing mantras: America, right or wrong! and, America; love it or leave it ;-) |

Tony said: "And let's not forget the most important breakthrough of them all, one that I never thought I'd see in my lifetime: the election of an African-American as president of the United States" This is the United States of America, land of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln , George Washington Carver and Martin Luther King. It doesn't matter what color they are, they are great Americans. Martin Luther King said "content of your character is more important than the color of your skin". This last election we had two poor choices. Martin Luther King would be very sad if he knew how many Americans voted for Barack Obama because of the color of his skin, NOT the content of his character. |

Tony and Rich; Why does it always have to be about what racial.ethnic/gender/sexual group someone is a part of? Why don't you simply want all Americans to have a happy 4th of July without going all identity politics? I don't care if someone is black, white, red, blue, green, male, female or whatever. We are all Americans. And the fact is, I don't care what race the President is, it is his policies which are what count. And as far as your glee in telling people who disagree with you to leave the country, it seems that what is leaving the country by the millions are jobs. Anyway, I do you wish everyone here a happy 4th no matter your politics, race, gender, ethnic background or sexual preference. AllanR |

We are staying in a small marina in northern Michigan this weekend. Many of the boats that are home-ported here have dressed ship with red, white, and blue themes. It was quite nice to seem them all. Lot's of flags waving, lots of signs like "Proud to be an American," and similar themes. I don't recall seeing quite such a spontaneous demonstration of enthusiasm for America in prior years. It is encouraging. Perhaps the Euro-centric left-wing intelligentsia-driven manifestation of self-hatred of our own nation is on the wane. Well, at least it looks like it among boaters in northern Michigan. My boat is flying an appropriately sized U.S. Flag on the stern staff. It looks better today than normal. |

"Perhaps the Euro-centric left-wing intelligentsia-driven manifestation of self-hatred of our own nation is on the wane." Let's hope the American-Firsters' historically blind, self-congratulatory 'We can do no wrong' attitudes are going through a similar transition. This great land is and always has been a work in progress, with many more miles to go before we're anywhere close to perfection. It's the journey, guys and gals, not the impossible-to-achieve destination. Our Whalers love the sea, not the harbor. Tony |

quote: I admire your optimistic outlook jimh but I think it has more to do with the left-wing intelligentsia believing that now that "their" boy is on office everything is right and good and they can feel free to express their patriotism. It's very telling that "they" choose to offer their "support" only when they are good and ready and only on their terms.

New 2 Whalers- Your "mulatto" comment reflects a person deeply out of touch with phrases no longer used in a civil society. Take off the white sheet before you post again. Thank god we are moving in a direction, of self respect and seeking respect, as a nation. lizard, The term "mulatto" describes a person half white and half black, nothing more, and is no more racist than the term "white." There are only three races and "African-American" isn't one of them. They are Caucasoid, Negroid and Mongoloid. The term African -American as applied to people who simply have dark skin, is a PC term. A true African-American would have to have been born in Africa and later became an American citizen. I only know one such person. He is white, was born in Durban South Africa, and now lives in Boston:-) |

New2, Only my GOD rates capitals, actually all capitals, Your god is only a statue, I have seen many statues of your god. I am not berating your god. He is powerful also. Yesterday, with his lightning strike he took out 28 members at a church meeting in Lakeland, killing one. It must have been a warning. Recently he has been outing folks in government too.
