That was a nasty looking one. Could have been the background or time of day to make it look that ugly. I too have had some great anxiety and Adrenalin rushes with those things.

Man! Those are nasty!

We get them on the Delaware River - just south west of the Philadelphia airport when the winds are blowing east to west and the airtraffic is flipped from it's normal east to west landings. When the plans land west to east - the post passing jet wash appearently creates them. Normally they are only about 8 to 10 feet tall, but I've seen them this summer as high as 20 feet - and often in twins. Even as small as ours are as compared to the ones in the pictures, they are not fun to get hit with.

Guys at our marina have seen boat's loose their canvas covers by our much much smaller waterspouts if hit just right.

When sailing up the Potomac River near Washington, DC, a small waterspout appeared directly in front of us. We changed course, and it quickly disappeared. The weather was beautiful, and we speculated that air traffic from nearby Ronald Reagan National Airport may have been the cause. Thanks, Rich S, for giving support to our theory.

That is a interesting theory. I guess small water spouts are some what like dust devils only it take more energy to get them going, like a big aircraft's prop or jet wash. Some people have though that the space program in Florida has contributed to some of our abnormal weather and I have always though that it BS but who knows.
