For those familiar with the Chesapeake Bay, you know this is not an every day sighting. These dolphins were approximately 50 feet from my slipped boat at the West River Yacht Harbor. That same day, while slipping our wave-runner in the water at a nearby ramp, a fin caught my eye moving through the water about 20 feet away. I didn't think much of it at the time, and wrote it off as a ray or skate, but after hearing of this, I'm sure it was one of these critters.

One time about three years ago in the Chickahominy River which feeds into the James which then feeds into the bay, my wife's kayak was lifted up by a surfacing manatee!. She and her friends followed it for about an hour. |

Interesting article about problems with dolphins and fishing gear in Florida: Sometimes they will hang around your boat and steal your bait.

I've had many a good offshore fishing spots ruined by porposes. When they come, you just pick up anchor and move on. |

Nearly 20 years ago I saw 2 watermen trying to lasso an elk swimming a couple miles out in the bay not far from Tilghman Island Light. Now that was unusual. |

Wow, Yesterday I was at Pt Lookout 7-7-09 and i saw a fin about three miles up the Potomac. I stampped on the floor and rode round it and it porpised up several times then I headed to the main bay bow trim up and making a slow but big wake and it followed me a bit jumping in the wake. This was the first porpose I have seen in 20 years in the Potomac. I have seen plenty of them in the Atalantic at Va Beach. |
