I got the new ETEC 150, we're installing it in the next couple of days. My question to my Whaler Brethern is; Which of the three settings for two stroke oil is preferred? My mechanic owns one himself on a bass boat and is urging me to go for the 100 setting. It comes from the factory ready to burn TWC30.
Just wondering what experiences we have out there as to pros and cons.

Thanks. Mark

(It's going on my 1985 18' Outrage)

The only drawback to setting it to XD-100 is that if you need to get more oil and don't have any available, you're out of luck.

The good news is that you rarely should find yourself in this situation.

For instance, last week, I cruised all week (380+ miles) aboard my 18' Outrage with TWIN 90 HP E-TEC motors set to XD-100. I started with the resevoirs full and brought an extra gallon of XD-100 just in case.

I am a little under 1/2 full on the resevoirs today...I never touched the extra gallon. In fact, with that last gallon of oil, I am pretty sure I can finish out this season without the need to buy more.

Queenfish, now is the time to make the switch to XD-100 if you are so inclined. The oil lines come from the factory with XD-100 oil in them even though the engine setting is for TWC30. (You can use XD-100 oil on the TWC30 setting but not the other way around)

If you use TWC30 oil and the TWC30 setting now, and you want to make the switch later, you should purge your resevoirs, oil lines, and engine oil lines of TWC30 oil and replace it with XD-100 oil to match the XD-100 setting. The winterization procedure for your E-TEC makes this much easier than it sounds, however it is still a consideration.

The pros are reduced oil usage with a better lubricating oil. The cons are you are limited to using Evinrude XD-100 which is about $10 per gallon more expensive than XD-50. The lubricating cost at either setting will be about the same, although the XD-100 is better at fighting carbon buildup so you may not have to run a decarb on the motor if you are using XD-100.

This scenario occured on the Etec owners site and it was advised it's ok

The manual states "if XD100 is temporarily unavailable a one time only use of an oil that meets TC-W3 is allowed".

I don't believe there are "three settings for two stroke oil." My understanding is there are only two choices, normal oiling or reduced oiling with XD100 only. In the normal oiling mode the recommended oil is XD100, but you can use other oils if desired, as long as they are a minimum TCW-3 rated oil.

Regarding the concern for not finding XD100, carrying an extra gallon of XD100 on board would probably solve the problem. If an E-TEC 150 is run according to the ICOMIA duty cycle, it will consume 3.2 GPH. If the XD100 setting provides oiling at a rate of 75:1 on average, that means that it would take than 23 hours (nearly three 8 hour days) to use up 1 gallon of oil. Given that the smallest oil tank is 1.8 gallons, the 1.8 gallon oil tank provides more than 40 operating hours (five 8 hour days) of oil. If one takes extra gallon with them they now have 63 operating hours (almost eight 8 hour days) worth of oil. Two extra gallons would provide enough oil to operate 86 hours (almost eleven 8 hour days). That's alot of operating time, typically about 30 hours more than most operate their motors in a boating season.

As Dave says, its unlikely that you would ever find yourself in a situation in the XD100 setting where you ran out of oil unless you plan to go on an 11 day off shore trip in the ocean with no sight of land.

I am having them set it on the XD100 setting. I purged the old tank and lines and ran half a gallon of XD100 through the system before filling the tank with the new XD100. The boat should be ready to set sail Tues.
As to "winterizing", don't forget, I live in San Diego...no winter here.
