My 89 150hp Johnson had an alarm go off( a constant whistle) a while back, I finally got around to checking it out and it was the Primer bulb. Just as my son said and I said "can't be". I changed the fuel lines , cleaned out the gas tank, checked the water pump , it was spewing water just fine. So it was either oil injection or a fuel restriction. So today ,my son the marine mechanic scolded me for not using the boat enough,he's right and said it was the primer bulb. It was . Problem solved. Something so simple?

I've got a good one as well. My 1996 Evinrude 200's oil alarm was going off, the one which indicates that there's an oil restriction. In an attempt to find a restriction that would result in any outcome other than replacing the VRO, I emptied and cleaned the oil tank, replaced the oil hoses, secured new clamps on all lines, etc, etc, etc. Still, problem not solved. Two weeks later I found that a vacuum hose buried mid-engine had split at the end and fell off. I cut a piece of new hose and problem solved. Lesson here.....don't just look for a problem, listen for it too. :-) |
