I just bought a 1998 Conquest 21 in showroom condition with a brand new Evinrude ETEC motor and cannot believe how incredible that motor is. The boat in awesome too but that was not as big of a surprise to me. After all, it is a Whaler. I've owned many boats in the past 22 years (since I was 13 years old) and every one had a Mercury outboard. This was my first purchase of a boat with an Evinrude and I will say that the ETEC is far superior in every aspect. The acceleration was like anything I have never felt before. It was super quiet and most importantly, unlike most of the Mercury's I've owned, it runs without problems. I have never been so impressed with an outboard motor before. In my opinion Brunswick bought the wrong motor company. And I USED to be a die hard Mercury fan until my eyes have been opened to better things. When it's time to re-power, GET ONE! You won't be disappointed. I feel like I have the best of both worlds now, finally!

BTW I bought the boat from Twin Cities Marine in Two Rivers Wisconsin "sight-unseen" which scared me to death but I put my trust in Al Howarth the owner who represented the boat accurately and was a pleasure to deal with. I live over two thousand miles from Twin Cities Marine and will buy my next boat (hopefully a big one) from him and will have it shipped by Uship.com. The service I received was very friendly and professional, unlike Lauderdale Marina, the clowns I bought my previous boat from who sold me a brand new boat that broke down on me the first time I used it and they did nothing for me to help. I cannot wait to get back on the water again. I'm gettin' giddy just thinking about it.

I've now had a month and about 50 hours with my new E Tec 90 on a classic Montauk and it continues to perform as advertised, which is to say admirably. The dealer installed BRP 17" prop fell a little short, but the newly installed Stiletto 15" is a perfect match. I now see 5300 RPM and 43 mph at WOT with a light load.
I am a very satisfied customer, but the real test will be the long haul since I tend to hang on to things.

We need a ETEC-Mercury race.

Race?

If I wanted to race, I'd have picked up a plastically enhanced girlfriend and a 42' Fountain, donned 3 lbs of gold chains and a pinkie ring.

I want to BOAT, and to EXPLORE and to get good efficiency and RELIABILITY and SIMPLICITY while still being as kind as possible to the environment and to the olfactory and aural sensibilities of myself and my passengers.

For me it was between an OptiMax and an E-TEC. I bought the E-TEC for two principal reasons beyond the above:
1.) I found a dealer that I trusted and liked
2.) I wanted to be able to run the motor regardless of battery status, and be able to pull-start the motor and run it without a battery (or with a dead battery) if necessary because of the remote places where I like to boat.

"Races" prove very little and aren't indicators of much, in my opinion and experience on this earth. Sure, someone has to be fastest, quietest, most efficient, etc.

But the right product for the right person is a mixture of the variables that are right FOR that person. Which is how all of the brands continue to survive.

Glad you like your E-TEC Basshole (Are you really going to stick with that screen name?!).

Basshole,

I think your comments echo the feelings of a lot of members here. I'm still running a 25 year old Johnson outboard. It's been rebuilt twice (first time there was a problem), but now runs like a champ. However, I know it won't last forever, so when it does come time to repower, my mind has already been made up; I'm buying an Etec. Mercury is not even on the radar screen.

Was down at the beach next to where I lauch two days ago. On the way to the car I saw a "Brand New" Guardian 22' with two 115 Mercs, at the wash site. His towing truck caught my eye also. A beautiful 2009 F-350 (Diesel) with a 'short bed'.
Never neen one with a short bed. Really nice!
Back to the gorgeous Guardian. Tried to watch from a distance, but kept walking closer and closer. This young guy was washing down the insides not missing a stop on the spotless beauty. He had every whistle and bell you could possibly put on it.
I saw dive tanks, but some nice 130 poles in the leaning post.
Couldn't stand it anymore so asked him if he had dived or fish. He kinded looked at me as if I didn't exist. Just mumbled that he fished only.
Asked if he like the dive door, his answer was that it wasn't any good unless you were on a calm lake, otherwise it swamped the boat out here in the Ocean. He still ignored me to some degree. Ok so he's washing his boat... I left and watched from a distance. Got talking to some friends and hung out for about another hour and then headed back with the dog to my car and saw he was still washing down the boat. Walked up and told him I too had a Guardian.
Then mentioned it was powered by an E-tech 150 and walked off to my beat up beach car and drove off. Would have loved to been able to taken some pics. It was a beauty!

Unfortunately some people are not very accepting of flattery over their boats. Sadly, I've noticed that some of the best kept boats are owned by some of the most anal people. To some of them, the boat is a status symbol, not a toy, or a source of pride. It's their drive to stay ahead of the "Jones's" that motivates them to spend an hour cleaning the boat after every use, or to drop $2,000 every spring on a professional wax job.

If someone walked up to me and started offering compliments about my boat, or asking questions, I'd have their undivided attention. What am I talking about, it happens all the time.

I'm glad your happy with the E-TEC. I went with the Mercury Verado as I feel it's the best option from whaler currently. If I had a choice I would have looked at the E-TEC for sure.

Good Luck with you NEW boat!!!

Umm racing would easily prove which boat has stronger acceleration which the original poster is raving about and claiming that this ETEC blows away any Mercury he has ever owned over the past several years. Basshole open the door here and in essence has said his ETEC in accerleration blows away Mercury hands down. I say lets see a race, prove it. Racing has a way of silencing the BS that oozes out of some and it doesn't take Fountain ownership or a plastically enhanced girlfriend to participate. Racing can be friendly and is not at all times a confrontational event.

Bucka, I am glad you love your ETEC and chose ownership of it over for other variables besides power, acceleration and top speed. I also understand why you would shy away from racing it. But please don not denounce racing because you lack the willingness to participate. People line up and race pedal boats , rowing shells, lasers, optis, sunfish you name it if man has built it it is in our nature to race it. To align racing to only those gold chains and expensive offshore powerboats is ridiculous. If my memory serves I saw a video of some guy at a rendezvous some years ago in a 15' Whaler frantically trying to keep pace with a fleet of much larger boats looked very much like a race of sorts and I think it was Buckda was piloting the 15'.

Many here would love to see LHG and Buckda line up. But looks like that just isn't gonna happen so we can only speculate about the outcome.

Good luck with your new boat/motor basshole.

On "boating flattery":
Tugboat, Whaler, Landing Craft, Maxweld sled...I always appreciate a compliment from a stranger at a gas station or launch site, but I have to admit, after awhile it gets tiresome when Im busy, I feel like a tour guide and can become a little smug but I dont worry about it. In fact, if the person doesnt realize Im on a mission that he is interrupting, he probably doesnt know squat about boats anyway.

I love to study boats, layouts, hulls etc...I can spend half a day just walking around a marina.
Ive felt the same as Shiela when I see great boats and wanted to BS with a busy owner.

I would suggest proper etiquette is to give your brief regards without expecting any banter and take it from there.

Glad to here that others are having the same great experiences with their ETECs. I was a little worried about the purchase at first but just felt like it was a time for a change and I couldn't be happier. Now I just need to keep my fingers crossed that it will continue to give me years of trouble free enjoyment because I don't see myself ever wanting to part with this setup. My ETEC is a 225HP as I forgot to mention that earlier in my original post. Also, not to bag on Mercury because that's all I've ever owned and in general I think they are good motors. I unfortunately got one of those bad 2000 150 HP Optimaxes that were rushed to market a little too soon. I did end up getting it to run good and was quite happy with it after that. As far as a race I too would love to see an Optimax vs. ETEC race. They are both beasts. It would be interested to see them on the the same hull for it to be a fair comparison. I just really couldn't get over how quickly the ETEC accelerated.

Towboater,
I do agree with that at most harbors.
Our small harbor is just that, a small, local harbor.
We have no towing, no USCG for a couple hundred of miles or more, we depend on each other no matter what kind of rig you're running. Even the local Dive and fishing Charters will not hesitate to tow if ever needed. Guess I've gotten spoiled over the years. You can talk to anyone and they will always respond with kindness. Whenever I haul out, I know there will be questions and banter. No stink eye ever. Many of these kind local people are really shy and it's just another reason why I and many others take time to banter. If you no want to talk, drive your boat home and wash it.
That beautiful Guardian was new to the harbor.
Just couldn't take my eyes off it.
