I've now reached the point with my 1983 Evinrude 235 where - even if the mechanic on Block Island can repair it, and even if he tells me it's bullet-proof - I will NEVER again go out on my Outrage with that thing on it.Thursday afternoon, I couldn't start it. Should have been a warning. Turned out that the starter had gone bad. Put another starter on it - it fired up. Drove it all the way down Narragansett Bay, past Point Judith, and across Block Island sound to New Harbor - no worries. Rafted it next to a friend's 37 Island Packet, who had sailed up from Rowayton, CT.
Next day, drove around the island trolling, with family and friends. Near 5pm, headed back to New Harbor. About 1 mile north of the entrance, the motor simply died. Lost power almost immediately. Engine cranks, but won't fire up. Actually, at one point, we had it running for about 5 seconds, but then it died again. Could be a fuel pump, I guess.
Sea Tow came out of Quonset - first time I've had to call them in my years of being insured by them. They only do one tow per "event" (understandably), so we went back to New Harbor rather than dragging my friends back to the mainland. The boat is now with a mechanic there who will take a look at it when he gets a chance. But as I said, even if he fixes it - I'm done with that motor. I really should have had a kicker, but hind-sight is golden.
When I get the boat back home (either under its own steam, a kicker, or by trailer on the ferry) it'll go into storage until such time as I save enough money for a Suzuki. By that time, at least the teak will be all varnished.
