I've now reached the point with my 1983 Evinrude 235 where - even if the mechanic on Block Island can repair it, and even if he tells me it's bullet-proof - I will NEVER again go out on my Outrage with that thing on it.

Thursday afternoon, I couldn't start it. Should have been a warning. Turned out that the starter had gone bad. Put another starter on it - it fired up. Drove it all the way down Narragansett Bay, past Point Judith, and across Block Island sound to New Harbor - no worries. Rafted it next to a friend's 37 Island Packet, who had sailed up from Rowayton, CT.

Next day, drove around the island trolling, with family and friends. Near 5pm, headed back to New Harbor. About 1 mile north of the entrance, the motor simply died. Lost power almost immediately. Engine cranks, but won't fire up. Actually, at one point, we had it running for about 5 seconds, but then it died again. Could be a fuel pump, I guess.

Sea Tow came out of Quonset - first time I've had to call them in my years of being insured by them. They only do one tow per "event" (understandably), so we went back to New Harbor rather than dragging my friends back to the mainland. The boat is now with a mechanic there who will take a look at it when he gets a chance. But as I said, even if he fixes it - I'm done with that motor. I really should have had a kicker, but hind-sight is golden.

When I get the boat back home (either under its own steam, a kicker, or by trailer on the ferry) it'll go into storage until such time as I save enough money for a Suzuki. By that time, at least the teak will be all varnished.

My next repower will be either Yamaha's, Honda's or Suzukis'. My 280 conquest has MercAnchors at the moment...

My 1984 Johnson 90 on my 67 Nauset has over 3000 hours and is still running...

Sorry...

Being another local: Ping me if you think a tow across to Point Judith behind my 42 Grand Banks would be of use. The trailer on the ferry might be the wisest thing though.

Here's a strong vote for Point Jude Marine in Wakefield for your re-power. Rick is a great guy, VERY detail oriented, and knows classic Whalers cold, having sold them for years. His shop generally has a half dozen classic whalers in for engine service and repower.

Dave - that is a very generous offer of you; let's hope it doesn't come to that.

I'll take a look at Point Jude Marine, although it's a hike from here in Barrington - thought I'd try to stick with something local. The re-power is going to have to be in the future, though... need to save a few pennies first.

Looking forward to hearing if the guy on Block Island is able to start it for me so that it can make it's (the motor's, anyway) journey back here.

Just ping if you need help.

Point Jude Marine may be a little bit from Barrington, but it's close to the BI Ferry landing on this side.. ;-)

I am sure that you know that if you do get it started and decide to run it across, you can drop your trailer and vehicle at the launch ramp parking lot in Galilee, walk 200 yards to the Ferry, take the ferry over to New Harbor, and then run back to Galilee to retrieve it onto your trailer.

If you want me to ride your rail to assist and/or tow in case the thing shits the bed again on the way back, I'll launch the Montauk here (Wakefield) and make the run over and then run back with you. If it craps out halfway back I'll toss a line and get you to the Galilee ramp.

Those old engines do have some value.. as a mooring. ;-)
