Will engine oil leak from a 9.9-HP Honda engine if it is transported in a horizontal position, that is, on its side in a vehicle? Assume the carburetor has been run dry or drained.

I have a Honda 2-HP four-cycle motor for my Zodiac. I've transported it in my truck and boat in almost every conceivable position. It doesn't leak anything.

Check with your owner's manual for advice on storage positions for your motor. The crank case lubricating oil in a four-cycle motor might not leak out, but it could get into some very odd places if the orientation of the engine was not considered.

Take a look at your owner's manual for the engine. My 9.9 four stroke Mercury is supposed to be transported or stored in a specific horizontal position. Mine is mounted on the back of the boat as a kicker but when I tilt it up I turn the wheel so the side that is supposed to be up is up. There is a sticker on the engine that indicates proper horizontal storage orientation.

I think it has more to do with oil leaking into the cylinders or crankcase than leaking out of the engine.

There are two feet ( serrated bumps) on one side of the motor. Always lay it down on this side or the the oil ends up in the cylinder causing it to lock up. high sierra

The owner's manual clearly states that the oil be drained... And further shows a reclining position for the engine... I've thought of oil in the crank case or cylinders... And, believe that I can deal with that by easing the engine thru a few revs, with the safety thingie yanked off.

This engine is going to power my "traveling yacht", a 10.5' Zodiac Zoom. There are no other options for storing the engine whilst enroute, except to lay it down. So lay it down I will, keeping the powerhead high, and the gearcase low. Then check and see what's happening.

Thank you all for your thoughts on this subject.

The owners manual instuctions on my 2 hp Honda 4-stroke state to store upright or on its side on the 2 "case protectors". These are on the opposite side from the tiller, and when rested on them (starboard side) prevents oil from draining into the wrong areas as previously stated by high sierra.

My Briggs&Stratton 5hp outboard manual specifies park plug up. To do otherwise lets oil flow by the piston rings and out dipstick tube. The manual for my Homelite and Bearcat both recommend that the oil be drained when the engines are store or transported horizontal.
