This is what I've seen being done more and more here in Hawaii.
I personally, like it.
Never ending Quest for more deck room.

Hi Rene -

Good to hear from you - how's that Guardian coming?

This looks like it was used to deliver surfers to remote beaches and breaks that aren't easily accessible by land. I imagine that there are several areas like that in the islands.

Interesting mod!

I've messed with the idea of completely converting my 18 into a hard-top pocket cruiser...but just haven't been able to bring myself to do it...yet.

Cheers!

Dave

That's similar to what our member Jeff Chamberlain has done with a classic 15. Many of us saw his sweet conversion several years ago when he brought it up from San Luis Obispo--where he is harbormaster at Port San Luis--to our NorCal rendezvous. Several high quality custom boatbuilders in Central California produce similar boats, with a strong following among surfers.

I'm at the office now but when I get home I'll post some photos of Jeff's boat. I like the look too, Rene, and love the idea of the additional space on deck. Some will say that moving the helm further forward makes for a rougher ride, and that sounds reasonable, but I'd sure like a ride in one to see for myself. BTW, my boat partners Matt/placerville, Warren/WT and I are slowly putting together our fourth partnership Whaler--this time a Guardian divemaster, and we're going to move the console up a bit on that craft. Nothing like these designs, but enough to give us some more room aft.

Jeff's boat at one of his secret, reachable-only-by-sea surfing spots in central California:

Dave and Tony!
I know this boat is used for fishing. You can see the large fishbox on the deck.
I did move my super console forward four inches.
Been fishing for four months with it. Just took out the leaning post and put in a much bigger Auzie Fish Box. More room, not so tight moving around.
Was out last week with three very large Samoans, sixty gals of fuel, and fish box full of block ice.
We had four to five foot seas with twenty mph winds. For the first time I was happy to have that 150 on the transom. Boat rode great even with fish in the box.
Would love to have other CW members give me a call if they ever make to The Big Isle.

Asking fifteen grand with twin Hondas, and for sale in Kauai'i's little east coast trade winds town of Kapa'a, six miles or so from my wife's family land in Anahola. Hmmm...

Nope, I don't think so, even though she's sweet and perfect for near shore fishing/cruising. Maybe if I could figure out some way to move over there permanently in my declining years...now there's a thought! Ono and mahi-mahi instead of Chinook salmon and ling cod; balmy trade winds during the winter months; getting back on a long board after treating my Whaler-induced arthritic lower back with lots of 500 mg Naproxen and puffing on a little Island herb; fresh fish every day, fresh veggies and fruit from our own gardens, and Spam with rice and eggs for breakfast.

I don't know if I could last, however. After several weeks over there in Paradise it always gets a little boring for me. I'm an urban guy at heart, more interested in the Snake and his foul doings than in the peaceful Garden. Nope, it's the raunchy mainland for me, though with increasingly longer and longer work breaks on the cold northern California Pacific in my boats.

But still, in another life...

Interesting conversion, I'm stoked somebody posted that. Funny how everybody in HI runs twins...? I've got a friend on Vancouver Island who is having a custom boat built, and it's the same remote/wilderness reality up there....he's going with twins also. When it's 'just you', no Vessel Assist, little cell phone coverage, and long CG response times, there's nothing like being to able to get home in a self sufficient manner...

Converting Whalers with the add-on cabins is a time honored niche, one with many successes (*and a few failures). On my 15, I cannot tell you how much more usable the boat is with all that deck space opened up..? The extra storage up under the cabin, the wind blockage, it's all good, all the time. That little boat of mine continues to amaze me, and it's all due to the 're-configuration' that was done almost eight years ago, truly, a huge improvement on an already proven hull. The Hawaii boats always look a bit like the boats done here; it's basic, proven 'work boat' and 'dive boat' design logic.

Re the 'harbormaster' career, I was always just a 'line officer', never management, and couldn't have been happier. However, it's all changed now, as I've retired and the horizon is opening up like the view up your coast, Tony, on a clear Fall day.

'Skiff,' for those who haven't figured it out, is our member Jeff Chamberlain, who, retired or not, harbormaster or line officer, is a hell of a seaman and surfer. See ya soon, Jeff, I hope.

This must be just the tip of the Iceberg;
I will look forward to hearing more;
And this being on Vancouver Island myself;
This had to perk me up.
As far as the conversion;
I do find it intriguing and would be interested to see of the ride it has to offer since the manning station will be seen so much more a bow.
Interesting.

My 18 Guardian is still upside down...almost ready for barrier coat.

Ive often considered a solid enclosure, similar to Lucky Lady's demo except the cabin beginning at the step to the open bow instead of decking over it.

I think the boat would carry the weight better and be able to keep the nice console aspect of easy anchoring and easy on/off for beach landings. The door could be opened if needed to let water pass thru.

I wonder how it sits in the water with those twin Hondas.
