Any experience with a trolling motor for a 17 Montauk would be appreaciated.I am in the midst of buying a new boat and want to outfit it with a trolling motor. It will be used in both fresh and salt water. Thanks, Alphonse

Well, that depends on what type of trolling you are talking about. Also, gas or electric? |

Don't need a trolling motor if you have a 60 hp four stroke. Will slow troll 1 mph with drift sock off bow and back 10'. Will fast troll 6-7 mph all day. WOT - 32 mph - 8 mpg./22 cruising speed. Eliminated my Yamaha trolling motor and additional 87#. Raised transom and made boat much drier. Very satisfied with this setup. $100/yr boatus or seatow for backup. Hope this helps. |

I have a Minn-Kota Rip Tide with grip glide mount that slides under the bow rail. It is 24-volt, and I forget how many pounds of thrust...maybe 60 (?) or so. Anyhow, I like it a lot, especially the remote control fob that allows me to control on-off, speed, and direction from anywhere on the boat. If you search this forum, you will find plenty of threads about this and other trollersI would buy that model again if ever in the market. Marsh

Marsh, How big is your boat? I am looking for one for a 17' Montauk. How much thrust do you think I need? |

I had a Minn Kota Riptide 55lb thrust which was ok for slow trolling on my Montauk 170 goint about a max of 1.8 mph. I replaced it with another Riptide of 70lb thrust, which pushed the speed to 3 mph. So, what trolling motor you get depends on what you want it to do. I fish the CA delta and need tons of thrust due to the tides. I always recommend going with the most power ou can get. |
