Press release follows:

----------------------------------------------------------
STURTEVANT, Wis., Nov. 5 (UPI) -- The U.S. Marine Corps has contracted Bombardier Recreational Products to deliver its multi-fuel engine technologies to support small-watercraft operations.

Wisconsin-based BRP announced it received a contract to equip the Marine Corps' F470 Zodiac boats Combat Rubber Raiding Craft with its Evinrude multi-fuel engines with impeller equipped jet model pumps.

Under the $10 million contract, awarded by the Marines under Defense Department battlefield fuel mandates, BRP will deliver its Evinrude engines capable of operating with kerosene, aviation fuels and standard gasoline.

"We're proud to be able to provide a U.S. military branch the innovative technology that Evinrude E-TEC engines deliver," Scott Weber, BRP Evinrude North American division vice president sales, marketing and after-sales service, said in a statement.

"Our multi-fuel engines are designed to meet the stringent requirements of the U.S. armed forces."
------------------------------------------------------------

It is my express hope that this sale will help stave off the impending financial doom for BRP and Evinrude about which so many readers of this website seem to delight in making constant innuendo.

I'm sure the Marines will come to their senses and cancel the order once LHG informs them that Etecs and all other brands EXCEPT Mercury only make a fraction of their rated horsepower, combined with the fact that ALL direct-injected engines except Optimax are destined to fail prematurely.

It must be painful for BRP to mainly be the leading candidate for almost the entire re-power market. I've yet to see a new Mercury on any transom in my marina, although there are many new Etecs and Yamaha's.

Rubber raiding craft need light weight so the etecs are a good purchase.

Merc is used on their interdiction boats out of Gitmo and Key West. Trip and Twin boats for Homeland Security. Some Yams too.

Everybody wins. Quit the rah-rah crap...

USCG uses Honda. I was looking at one of their 27 foot craft today. Given personnel cuts in military downsizing, they don't do any internal/organic maintenance anymore. It's all contracted out.

I've only been into boating for about 15 months, but I live only a couple of blocks from the local marina here in Santa Barbara, and I visit the launch ramp almost daily, even if I'm not going out for a quickie myself.

It seems like by far the greatest number of older outboards that are still earning their their keep in a commercial application are OMCs. You see new Mercs on new Whalers, of course, and the _new_ outboards that are being used commercially seem to be Hondas. I asked a guy who was a commercial user why he picked Honda, and he said that in our region, [the northern part of southern California], Honda has the best dealer representation. I have not put any effort into verifying this or asking other boaters. I also imagine Hondas as rugged and trouble-free in general, based on my satisfaction with my Honda mower and my friends who race cars with Honda motors. A loose relationship to Honda outboards, I realize.

Looking at the GSA auction site ( http://gsaauctions.gov/gsaauctions/aucindx/ ) it appears that some arm of the Government is undergoing a massive repower. Anyone know which one or what is going on the transoms in place of all the Mercs ?

Keep in mind that the military, even the Marine Corps, which normally gets hand-me-downs, retires equipment even if it is still serviceable.

I'm sure there's some bean-counter in the Pentagon that decides when this should be.

I was in the Marines when the HMMWV was being adopted by the Corps; some of the jeeps we retired from my Comm Battalion were less than three years old and had mileage numbers in triple digits.

I was in Homer Alaska last June for about two weeks, went down to the spit (marina/boat yard) to go fishing. #1 motors were about a tie Old & New OMC's and Yamaha's, third place Honda's, last place Mercury...The sad thing is that there was a Mercury dealer in town and from the look of the town/marina no one purchasing any Mercury outboards...

You are correct in your assessment of the outboard motor loyalty in Santa Barbara. The Honda's have been the motor of choice do primarily to Eric Peterson, the owner of "Specialty Marine", our local authorized Honda marine dealership.

Eric and his staff have established themselves as the finest marine shop in Santa Barbara County.

I strongly recommend "Specialty Marine" to all of my "West Marine" customers.

For the record my last 3 motors have been Honda's that I purchased from "Specialty Marine".

jimh, I must say, when I first read the headline, U.S. Marine Corps Buy Evinrude, all I could imagine was that the US Marines had gone into the outboard engine business! I mean after all, they could roll it under the GM (Government Motors) Division. Now that would be a Game Changer. HA!

The U.S.Marine Corp does not buy anything without extensive testing. This engine meets the many needs of the Corp.
Especially the multi fuel requirement which no other
outboards I know offer! I am sure the Navy Seals will also
make use of these engines.

Is that the rah..rah crap you didn't want to hear glen e!
