I have an [1983 Boston Whaler OUTRAGE 25] called Big Poppi. I fish for sturgeon and stripers. We are anchored doing this. I need at least six rod holders at the stern. I do not have enclosed stern section like on [a Whaler Drive]. [Do] you guys mount a board going across? Or add a railing section? Would like some input before I do trial and error. |

Do you have side rails? Can you post a picture? |

Pick up a stern rail or have one made. Many classic Whalers have this item. You can mount plenty of clamp on rod holders to it. I have four mounted on my Revenge stern rail along with three flush mounts on each gunnel. In the picture above, you can see the stern rail. In this case there is also a teak back rest attached to the rail, as I have a fold down stern seat. You can add just the rail or the rail with a back rest to give you something to lean against. |

Go to www.driftmaster.com I was at his plant yesterday and he makes a striper set up for just what you are talking about. You could mount as many rod holders off the back as you want. Nice guy and great products. |

I own an Outrage 22 and my brother-in-law owns an Outrage 25. We had 1" stainless tubing bent to align with the center to center dimensions of our aft flush rod holders. Rod holders are clamped to this rail. The flush mount rod holders do not work particularly well with the salmon and bottom fishing situations we encounter. We found this to be a good way of utilizing the existing hardware to fit our technique. The added bonus is the extra security at our cut transom boats while fishing off the coast in the ocean. Also, it is easily removable for war, Sunday afternoon cruising. I could take some pictures and post links if interested. Doug Vazquez |

I don't know where the word "war" came from. it should have read: "Also, it is easily removable for Sunday afternoon cruising." Sorry about that. Doug Vazquez |

pics would be great. I have searched looking for pics of different set ups. I had a seat mounted at the rear with batteries located inside then a 2x6 bolted to downrigger brackets that slid into the existing rod holders. This was set up by the previos owner. It is a nice set up but puts you like 3 to 4 feet from the edge of the motors. When fighting a big fish it can be troublesome. I caught a big 60" sturgeon and was standing in the splash well to keep from entanging in the prop. I only want to do this once. |

It sounds like you need to build yourself a deck over the splash well or install a swim platform and fish off of that if you want to avoid standing 4-6 feet in from the outboard motors. No matter how many rod holders you add or where you add them, if you stand on the cockpit deck (not in the splashwell) then you will be several feet away from the engines. |

I found one already posted: http://www.whalercentral.com/infusions/personal_page/view_personal_page. php?user_id=306 Scroll to 2nd to the last picture near the bottom of the page. Its not the greatest illustration, but you will get the idea. There is a little peek-a-boo of the rail on the very bottom picture as well. Doug |

DeeVee - Thanks for the pics. Great idea that I may implement on my OR18 BigDaddyWhaler - Once you install the beam or rail you'll need to mount rod holders. I recommend either the Lininger Rod holders or a balance beam type holder.
Lininger rod holders are difficult to find in stock but can be ordered from most local fishing shops through Hayward Fishing Supply. They are the ones you see on the salmon boats with the ring in back and fork in the front. Sturdy and easier to remove rods at various angles than from rocket launcher type holders. Good luck! |
