My son and I were fishing in Kailua Bay yesterday and traveling from one spot to another when apparently we got too close to where President Obama and family were staying. We were approached by several heavily armed men in a RIB boat that looked very cool. The men were polite but insisted that we stay pretty far away from the North end of Kailua Beach. Here is a picture of the RIB boat: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v235/perrycl/RIBS.jpg |

Looks like BW didn't get the contract to supply the boats. If BW had gotten the contract, at least I could say "my tax dollars were spent wisely." |

Here's a picture of George Bush Sr.'s boat refueling last spring at my local Boston Whaler dealer in York, Maine (York Harbor Marine). Looks like even ex-presidents' security get all the best toys. http://s75.photobucket.com/albums/i316/srcbell/?action=view& current=BushSrSecurity.jpg |

I used to live right down the road from the York Harbor Marina on Raynes Neck Rd. and I kept my first Whaler, '88 22' Revenge, there. I believe that the boat in the photo is Pres. Bush Sr.'s not the secret services because one time when my family and I were comming back in Bush Sr. passed us, and waved to my 3 yr. old daughter, with his secret service detail following behind in a 27'+ black ribbed zodiac like cc. The secret service guy's were very funny because they tried to look very serious, with all their M-16's and a tri-pod mounted 40 cal., they gave a small smile and wave to my daughter as they passed. |

Years ago my brother and I were striper fishing around Harkers Island with a guide. Unfortunately Bush Sr. was there also. What a huge [unclear]. Along with the former president and his fishing guide there were seven other boats, not including the coast guard which had another 3 and a helicopter. How anyone caught fish that day was beyond me. Our guide was [upset] because we had to keep a one-mile distance from the group. |

It was a 22' WT but it had a 225 Johnson VRO on it. Just before we moved down to VA I had started to do some work on it, we had Redman Marine, York, Maine, put a beautiful frame for a soft top and full enclosure which I had a Virginia canvas maker produce. I then sold the boat to a great guy in New Jersey who completed all the restoration work along with a Evenrude E-TEC repower. We then got our prize possesion, the 1991 27 Walkaround with twin 250 E-TEC engines. |

I asked because I had bought my 22 WT up in that area around 1997. Thanks anyway |

There was a time when a presidential security boat might have been a Boston Whaler. However, at that time, presidents probably did not have a fleet of small boats that followed them around. As best as I can recall, George H. W. Bush was the first president of the modern era who also was a boater, at least a boater in terms of a small boat that a person of normal means could afford. Before that presidents were "yachtsmen" and owned their own yachts, or spent most of their time on the water as guests aboard the yachts of wealthy and influential friends. I also found it a curious and almost universal misrepresentation in the media of Mr. Bush's as a wealthy person because he could own a small boat and go fishing in coastal waters. Heck, I own a small boat that could go fishing in coastal waters, and I am certainly not a member of the wealthy class--by any definition! |

Jim - I hate to say this, but your "small boat" didn't cost anywhere near what George Bush's triple-300 Verado-powered Fountain cost! That kind of craft, like the new 370 Whaler, is indeed for well off people. |

When he was vice-president, I think Bush had something like a 24-foot sterndrive boat. I don't think that the cost of a 24-foot sterndrive is beyond the reach of most of the boaters I know. Some of the boaters I know own four boats and seven or eight outboard motors, which probably total up to at least the cost of a 24-foot sterndrive. |

Boats like Bush's Contender with the three Verado engines are fairly common here in Florida. I guess Larry just has not seen them. They are somewhat expensive but will not break the bank. Not impressed. |

I thought Bush Sr. and Reggie Fountain were buddies. Or did he get an other new boat? Con |

I believe George Bush Sr had a stern drive Cigarette boat "Fidelity" for many years. Rare open bow dual console model, may have been a custom deck. Aronow design, purchased from Lansky. I repect and admire his courage and luck in WWII but I doubt that his business leasing oil rigs to Saudis left him unable to afford a larger boat if he desired. The Kennedys had the reputation of being small boat sailors. MartyD |

One little financial piece of good luck that happened to President George H. W. Bush was when he accepted shares of Founder's Stock in some corporation about to go public in lieu of his speaker's fee of $35,000 for a speech in Japan back in the late 1990's. The IPO was very successful and his shares became worth $34-million. I saw him interviewed about this on TV right after it happened and he was incredulous, like a three year old at Christmas. Very human and down to earth. So, yes, he could afford a big yacht, but he knows its more fun for him to have that triple Verado rig and drive it himself. JimL |

It would appear that ConB is right on. Bush's boat is a 38' Fountain. That Contender must be a security boat. |
