Amulet: http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b309/elaelap/Amulet1014.jpg Actually, I didn't perform the christening, my daughter did day-before-yesterday as a group of family and friends stood around in the rain and then shared what was left of a decent Sonoma County chardonnay. These two photos were taken today (January 3rd in 65 degree sunny weather!) at the Petaluma turning basin, which is one of our gathering places for the NorCal spring Whaler rendezvous. As my daughter said at the end of our little ceremony, "Fair winds and calm seas, Amulet." Tony |

Congratulations, Tony. Looks like a beautiful boat. I will watch for you sturgeon fishing on SPB. I will be on the water often this season - please shoot me an email when you head out and we can buddy boat. Tight lines, |

Sounds great, IC. I've never killed a sturgeon. Maybe we'll even get a salmon season--albeit a short one--this year. I'm looking forward to checking out your new-to-you Outrage 18 in person. She sure looks sweet in the pix! Tony |

Speaking of sturgeon and SPB (irishcreamer is referencing San Pablo Bay, the northernmost reach of the San Francisco Bay complex), here's a link to a very embarrassing thread more than a little related to that area and that type of fish. Joe Kriz got it wrong in his initial post, BTW...it was SPB, a couple of miles southwest of Port Sonoma, not the Delta as he mentions in his first comment: http://continuouswave.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/009156.html Some of the oldtimers at this website still tease me about that fiasco, IC. It happened several years before you joined this forum. It may be why I've never since had much enthusiasm for sturgeon fishing ;-) Tony |

Tony! Happy New Year- she sits a little lower by the stern, but I like it. Amulet is a great appellation- 'an object that protects a person from trouble.' I still have that bow cushion, I'll try to get up there soon to get it to you. Maybe we could go for a ride? All the best to you and yours- Tim |

Never killed one? Does that mean you never caught one? I just figured with all the time you spent stuck in the mud that you were a seasoned sturgeon angler :) The fishing has been pretty good the past few weeks. Are you able to get out on Mondays or Tuesdays? I should have room for you next week if you would like to join me. Thanks again for sharing your new to you Montauk. I can still remember the joy I felt when I first brought my OR18 home. |

At the rate you're going Tony, your graphic designer buddy will provide beautiful lettering for every Boston Whaler vessel in Northern California. Every time I see that style of graphic, I think "there goes another Whaler Tony bought and sold.." She looks nice too, but I think you better loan in to Warren for awhile so it can look the part of a real Bodega Bay fishing boat... It's a bit too creampuffy for the stories we tell around the Casino.. |

Credit Tim/estero for this 27-year-old Montauk's nice condition, Steve. He always kept her covered, washed her down and flushed the motor after each use, and nicely maintained the wood. Don't worry, I'll beat the hell out of her soon enough--or the Bodega Bay/Pacific salt will do the job for me. Next and final step with the graphics: use my wife's hair dryer to help peel off the CF numbers and replace them with red ones. Other than that, leave the boat well enough alone and start piling on the hours ;-) Tony |

Oh yeah, she could use forty or fifty pounds of salmon weights in the anchor locker, couldn't she, to help balance the new 57-lb kicker and level the static trim somewhat. It's on the short list. |

Looks great Tony! For a minute there I thought your trip to Florida had affected your psyche! I thought to myself, why would anyone name a California boat after the sturdy southern staple, the Mullet? After closer inspection of your photo, I realized it might be time to get some reading glasses! Still, if you think about it, Mullet might be a pretty good name for a Whaler, sleek, quick, they can fly through the air, and best when surrounded by smoke (don't know if you had a chance to try smoked mullet while you were there, it's more of a Northern Gulf Coast thing) Looking good Tony! Now how 'bout some fish pics for those of us who are grounded by the cold? 19 degrees here in Georgia this morning, calling for snow on Thursday! -k |

'A mullet' rather than 'Amulet', eh Kevin? Well, that works I guess. Perhaps a more esoteric rearrangement of my new boat's name would be 'mu tale', 'mu' being the Japanese character for 'no answer' or 'no-thing', a critically important Zen concept: e.g., To answer the koan "Does a dog have Buddha nature?", a proper response is "Mu"...or so I've been told ;-) Tony Speaking of Zen koans, here's a "Mu tale" only slightly paraphrased to add relevance for this website: Kevin, an aspiring student of Zen Buddhism, was visiting a Boston Whaler dealership. As he was walking among the classic Whalers in the yard, he heard another potential purchaser telling the salesman that he, the purchaser, wanted to buy a used BW, but that he "only wanted the best one, the very best classic Boston Whaler ever made." The wise salesman replied: "All my classic Whalers are the best." Hearing this, Kevin became enlightened... ...and later bought a Menemsha (what more Zen boat than that?) and lived happily ever after. |

I think that poem is from Tony`s hippy days. I think Amulet is a charm worn to ward off evil back in the day of the flower children. I may be wrong on that as I was a little to old to make the Woodstock scene. rich/Binkie |
