My wife and I want to do a Florida vacation this winter; we've enjoyed Key West in the past but would like to get off the beaten path a bit. I found some info on Pine Island Key. Does anyone have any opinions on this place, where to stay, etc., and are there any rental Whalers around there. Looking around end of January or early February.

I think elaelap took the keys to Florida home with him - Dude, return the keys, it's cold and we need to run the heaters down there.

Here's a piece from the counselor's recent trip to Ft Lauderdale:

Tony,
If you make it to the Keys and need a place to crash the Coconut Palm Inn is a great place. My Wife and I have stayed there for a wedding and really enjoyed the place. Not that spendy either. It is between Key Largo and Islamorada.

dscew -- fire up Google Earth, turn on Places of Interest/Lodging, then zoom around the keys looking for interesting spots.

Once you find something, click on the little red bed, and you should get a link, reviews, and more.

Use TRIP/RENDEZVOUS for trip planning.

Great suggestion, David P. I'm going to do just that for our 2011 Keys trip.

dscew, here is an article you might find helpful, documenting a trip I took to the Keys from Milwaukee where we settled on the next key south of Big Pine; Little Torch.

In retrospect, we would much prefer staying at a resort than a private canal or waterfront rental house. Even though we were with friends, the benefits of space, community, a larger swimming pool, a central bar and restaurant would suit us better.

Try the Bay Breeze Inn in Tavernier-has a free boat ramp and great fishing bayside.
