Hello All,

My wife and I just purchased our first Whaler, a pristine 1991 30th anniversary addition Montauk and are looking for recommendations on nice places to launch in the Los Angeles area for a Sunday cruise. This is our first boat so we are looking for something that is on the calm side. If anyone has any launch ramps they think we should try please let me know. Thanks to all for all the wonderful info on this site! you guys sure keep people coming back for more and its great to finally be a Whaler Owner. Ill try and attach some pics if I can.

Cheers,

caleb and megHan

Congrats but be on the safe side and take a boating safety course, maybe one of the local folks would help you break her in and familiarize you with the waters.

Welcome to this great place, Caleb and Meghan.

Launch at the Marina del Rey ramp (Fiji Way, Basin H). Big wide easy ramp and lots of parking. Cruise out through the harbor and channel, turn right and head up past Venice Beach to the Santa Monica pier. Nice couple-of-hour day trip there and back in your boat. Soon you will want to head up to Malibu and beyond or down past Playa del Rey and the beach cities, around Palos Verde and into the San Pedro/Long Beach harbor complex to check out the amazing scene down there. Give yourself a full day for either trip. And then, when the weather's nice, head over to the Catalina isthmus, boat/camp there or treat yourself to a nice-but-pricey hotel stay (reservations well in advance!), and don't miss free-diving and snorkling in the incredibly clear water over there.

Enjoy your new Whaler! Many at this website would die to own and operate that fine craft. Photos please when you get the chance.

Tony

P.S. I lived on a sailboat in Marina del Ray for a year or so in the late '70s. What great memories.

Thanks for the info! Tony I have followed your posts as I see you are from Northern Cali. My wife is from there and we are up in Marin often...Nicks Cove, Tomales Bay, Sausalito...I love it up there. Maybe we could all head out one day. Itw ould be great to meet up with some of the owners at one time or another.

I think we will head out of MDRl tomorrow as we want to make a stop off at West Marine :)

Also how do you post a pick?LOL

Caleb,

I'm a very computer-challenged older guy, but even for me the Photobucket website and its photo-posting protocol were relatively easy to figure out. It's free (or used to be) if you want to put up with a bunch of advertisements; after a couple of years I ended up paying about ten bucks per year to buy the 'super special whoops-see-doopsy' membership (or whatever it's really called)...which allows one to post photos more easily (I guess), and does not have a bunch of annoying ads show up when you and your visitors visit the site to check out your pix. Google "photobucket" and you'll be overwhelmed by the results.

Anyway, please share some of your adventures with your new Whaler with the rest of us if you feel so inclined, with or without photos. There's a relatively small contingent of west coast members here--many down in the SoCal region--who will be glad to hook up with you, virtually and/or personally. Enjoy and welcome!

I agree with Mark. At least make sure you have a VHF radio and cell phone (the latter is useless where I boat, but not down in the L.A. basin) on board, even if you're only heading out for a couple of hours. I'm sure you know that the Coast Guard monitors channel 16. Have a great time.

I agree! I have all the proper safety equipment on board as well as a level head on my shoulders. I will not be heading directly out to blue water.

For first trials on your new boat try launching out of Alamitos Bay in Long Beach. I use Davies launch ramp. The area has plenty of services and there is the marine stadium by the launch ramp that you can run speed runs around to test your new boat on relatively flat water. There is the small harbor to cruise around and then you can go out to the outer harbor and make a run to the Queen Mary to get a feel on how your boat handles still protected from the big blue but relatively choppy water. Wind picks-up in the early afternoon making the area even choppier. Nothing your boat cant handle.

You can also tow down to Newport Beach and launch out of Newport Dunes and cruise the harbor there and go out to the ocean when you feel more comfortable with your new boat.

Have fun,
Steve
