As some of you know I have had an interest in Great White Sharks since I was a youngster. I had the opportunity to dive with these guys a couple of years ago off the west coast of Mexico, and it was amazing! Prior to this trip my wife and I had booked a trip to the Farallon Islands, 27 miles off of San Francisco. We never made it to the Farallons, the trip weathered out both days, on the second day we made it about 1/2 way to the islands, but 10 foot seas with three feet of slop on top, as well as several seasick divers, (I would have been next!) made us turn the 40-50 foot dive boat around.

Everytime I hear of Warrens marathon rides, or Tony's offshore adventures, I am amazed at the sea conditions that they could face if they don't time the weather just right. The following is a great video about sharks in the Farallons, but even more amazing is what is shown briefly at the 8:25 mark- keep your eyes peeled, the sighting lasts for just a few seconds:

Good to see another one, and big cohones to the guys in her. The sharks they're tagging are bigger than the boat! -k

Kevin- GREAT link. You had the best of both of your world's in that one. I admire the people doing this work. Sharks need protection, too.

Nice boat, that looks familiar. :-)

Liz- Glad you enjoyed it! Although I'm not sure "enjoyed" is exactly the right word, the "shark-finning" stuff is pretty disturbing.

Murphy- That Menemsha looks to be pretty well intact, (minus the seat) and OEM. I'm surprised that they can fit a kicker on the that transom! -k

I was disturbed, I mean really disturbed by the shark finning footage. What a colossal waste. If they are going to kill them, why not harvest the meat. It broke my heart to see them tossed overside to drown.

Matt and I ran Strike3 to the Farallons from Bodega Bay to fish for rock fish. The Farallons are cool, especially if you get to see some Great Whites.

They will have shut most of the my spots for fishing along Northern California Coast this coming April 1, 2010. I suppose this is good for the fish.

I'm not sure if I'll be doing many more 100 mile round trip fishing marathons. Not even sure if I need an ocean going boat anymore....sad.

That was a nice video. I too found the "finning" footage hard to watch.

Warren- If I am reading the map on your link correctly, does that mean you will be allowed to fish south of the Bodega Head SMCA through the north of Point Reyes SMCA? Are those pockets in between marine conservation areas still open to fishing?

Have you seen a Great White out there when you were at the Farallons?

lizard, yes, you're right. There is still a lot of ocean to fish in. It's just that rock fish like to be near rocky bottoms and from Bodega Head south to Point Reyes, most of the area is sandy.

My favorite spots are inside the Stewarts Point SMR. It looks like I have to travel a little further north.

I have never seen a Great White up close but CW member fishnchips has. It came along side his Montauk, and the shark was longer than his boat. :-O

I want to run out to the Farallons this shark season in my 170 Montauk in hopes of seeing some Great Whites. I think we should get a group of Whalers to make the run. I'll post in the Rendezvous section.

Warren- Would shark season for GW's be Dec-Feb up there? It sounds from the video link, like they go to GW sharkville after that. Does Fishnchips have photos? BTW, who is Fishnchips, I think he knows my buddy, Lambert Woo.

Great White season is September through November.

Here's a picture of Lambert heading towards shore after our offshore squid run back in 2005. He has an 18 Edgewater with 115 Yamaha, right?

Here's Ken (fishnchips) (Ken taught me the ropes) on his 170 Montauk on the same squid run.

A Farallons run in September-November would be perfect if we can get some rock fishing done out there on the same trip.

Here's a picture of one of the Northern Farallon Islands.

Yes, that is Lambert in the 18 Edgewater. He stepped up to that from a Classic Montauk and was quite pleased with the move.

The photos are great. Thanks for sharing them.

Warren- The crew that is mentioned in your link is the same crew we went to the Farallons with, and the same company that took us to Isla Guadelupe. Lawrence Groth is the man in charge, and a hell of a good guy! Bent over backwards to be sure we had a great time! Although pricey, I'd recommend any of his trips, any time! -k

Lizard,
yes, I do know lambert.
We sometimes fish together or at least on the same patch of water 8-)

I have been to the farallons many times. One time I saw a pretty large great white. It was BIG. You just got to see one and you will be so impressed/scared.
That shark circled my boat 3 times before he changed his mind and decided to go elsewhere.
I was on my hydrasports 22 wa on that particular day. I swear it was as long as my 17 montauk.

Ken (170 montauk / 22 hydrasports wa)

Ken, look in the Rendezvous section. I want to run to the Farallons to check out some Great Whites. Get Jack and Lambert to go too. It's only 33 miles to the Farallons from Half Moon Bay.
