Got this year's resident [unclear, possibly meant New York] fishing license. Last year [the fee was] $19; this year [the fee is] $29. Just a [portent] of what is to come. How about other states, are you seeing this type of increase? Can't wait to see what the Whaler and Trailer registration fees are.

Our Licenses normally run $41.50 to over $100, depending on which stamps and report cards you need.

See fee structure here:

You won't believe the rules we need to remember either. Varies by water fished and species of fish and sometimes based on GPS coordinates. Very bizarre...

All the states are in trouble, some (dem states) worse than others, and they are going to try and grab money anyway any how they can. Florida Fish License has gone up also however, I was lucky enought to purchase a life time state fishing license for me and my son when they first came out. I never have to pay again for a fishing license or any raises that come along for my son or me. Florida auto tags have also more than doubled; the only good thing about it is now you can purchase two years at a time instead of one. I can see road tolls rising, gas taxes, taxes, and hotel taxes just to name a few that will rise to meet the government spending budgets--hahaha. Just have to face it everyone is going to pay more some where period. Good luck to all and hope the light comes on.

I agree, it is becoming a rich man's sport. Gone are the days of Grandpa and the little ones sitting on the bank or in a boat on a pond with a cane pole and a worm.

We spend thousands on boats/motors/tackle/bait/fuel and now they want $50 for a license....Geesh!

Just kidding, your license $$$ pay my salary to protect what we enjoy, so I am truly grateful!

That being said, may I suggest you purchase the lifetime license option ;-) The State Furloughs are Killing Me!

In Ohio I paid $19.00, same as last year. We don't have any extra fees for trout or any other species.

I was told that a national fishing license is available which would be valid within all states. Can anyone confirm or deny this? Thanks!

Too bad, I have dreams of fishing down south during the winter. Well at least the state license meets the federal registration requirement, perhaps we'll get a few more fish cops to patrol our local waters and watch over "my" clam beds.:-)

There is nothing better than poaching fish while drinkng a few barley pops in my Whaler and my catch usually taste better. I'm not talking about cooking methods ;-)

Mmmyep. $41.50 base price here in CA. I was out the door for $46 and change because I added the stamp that actually allows me to fish.* But the pricing scheme is not so bizzare if the fish and game employees are paid like CHP troopers, with salaries after 5-years, way, waay, waaay over $100k/yr and the possibility of retiring before 50 with way, waay waaay over $100k/yr for the rest of your life. Oh, and the 6 weeks paid vacation a year ain't so bad, either. The money for that has to come from somewhere, right?

FWIW, the stamp I got was not for any particular species.

*What? You didn't really think that buying a mere fishing license would actually allow you to fish without paying more did you? Get real.

The cost of a fishing license in MA this year is $0.00. But you have to have one for everyone in the boat. No such thing as a boat license.... uugghhh

I work in Alaska every summer and the going rate for a non-resident full year fishing license is $150.00.I paid $54.35 in California but that included a second rod stamp for $12.35 which means the license cost $41.50.I do not mind paying these rates as long as there is enforcement of the regulations to prtect the resource.

Yes, California is full of fees, stamps and extra taxes.

I forgot to report what I paid... $75.90 that was for the license, an ocean enhancement stamp to fish the ocean, a second rod stamp (so I can fish most inland waters with two rods), a Northern CA Salmon card, a steelhead card and (one which is not listed) the Warden stamp which donates money to buy the Wardens better equipment. The Warden stamp is actually a decal and I placed it on the windshield of my Montauk.

Warden Stamp can be seen here:

The first photo on the page is of a CA DFG dog checking out what looks like a Whaler 13 Sport.

When you renew your registration in Md, you can add a fishing license for anyone that is fishing on your boat. I think it is about $50, and has remained the same for years (if my memory is correct). I end up writing a check to Md DNR for about $75, which lasts two years...

Don't get me wrong, I don't like spending money, particularly on fees and licenses. I spend ~$60 for salt, fresh, and shellfish license in WA.

But on the flip side, as an avid fisherman I support funding of management and stewardship of our resources. I don't like being told when to fish, how to fish, and where to fish.

But, fact of the matter is I am going to take what I can. Not as a passive person, but with an understanding that wildlife officials, interest groups, and Native Americans are working towards a common goal of having a sustaining aquatic wildlife. If I don't like how the fisheries are being managed, I work with interest groups, and go to the ballot box.

My real concern is ending up like CA, with no salmon season; or worry about carp and quagga mussels. Let alone having people that disregard state and federal laws and poach to no end.

The story below, is talking about a lot of oysters being illegally harvested in a small body of water.

I just hope we're getting our money's worth. How do we know that a significant portion of our fishing license fee doesn't go to funding some other insult to the taxpayers?--Peter

CONTINUOUSWAVE does not try to collect or track how the individual state governments spend the fees they collect for various recreational activities. A good source of information about how your local state government raises revenue and how it apportions that revenue is your local state representative. Please contact your local state representative to learn how your fishing license fee is used in the state budget.
