We put our bizarre partnership prototype Revenge back in the water on Friday, and Matt/placerville and I took her out for a spring break-in cruise (our third partner, Warren/WT, was missing in action, no doubt making another one of his solo 200-mile runs in his individual BW, a Montauk 170). Yesterday we took 'Strike3' out again, this time with Matt running that boat and me in my 1982 Montauk. We saw whales both days about eight miles off Bodega Head, ~60 miles north of San Francisco. Here are some photos:

Matt leaving Bodega Bay harbor:

Matt went fishing for a while (sand dabs, which are like tiny delicious halibut, found in 300 ft depths--he got a bunch of them each day and we had 'em for dinner Friday night):

Another great day Whalin', with the added bonus of a strong rumor that we're going to finally, after two years, get a shot at salmon this year, albeit a brief one (maybe only the month of April, but hell, that's better than nothing).

Tight lines and fair winds, Whalers.

So you're planning on killing your share of a species whose viability is so fragile that special season to season regulations are required to avoid total collapse of that segment of the ecosystem?

LOL

Salmon are a very renewable fish species, their birth-to- reproduction-to-death life cycle being only four (or in some cases five) years. There are important issues regarding the protection of Pacific Ocean wild salmon stock, which means that occasionally seasonal adjustments need to be made, and restrictions on fishing certain varieties in certain locations are indicated. We've suffered through an unusually bad chinook/king salmon return here in northern California over the past several years, but indications are now good that the stock is rebounding, thus the possibility of a shortened season this year and hopefully a resumption of a full season, recreational and commercial, next year.

But this thread wasn't about problems with salmon. I was just trying to share the joy Matt and I experienced over the past two days, with our partnership boat back in the water, decent spring weather, and two days of operating our wonderful Boston Whaler motorcraft in the midst of a Gray whale migration. Hope some of you shared our enthusiasm.

You should see me close up, David. But while 'Strike3' and I might share appearances that "only a mother could love", and we'll never win any beauty contests, that's for damn sure, we're hell on wheels when it comes to having fun and kicking a$$.

What's wrong with shooting fish with a rifle from tree?

Nice pictures Tony. I wish I could have made it yesterday. I had more important things to do yesterday. My wife made me go shopping with her to buy replacement patio furniture cushions.

Well thanks, Kevin, but those photographs were just snaps of a couple of days of pure fun. We had a great time outside the harbor viewing the Gray whale migration and playing around with our Whalers. Now if you want to talk about awesome...

I repeat my comment on that thread, K: You've gotta have 'em, extra large size, to even think about going in a cage and experiencing The Landlord up close and way too personal. Better you than me, pal. I had one right next to my boat half-a-dozen years ago, and the thought of purposefully diving in a bunch of them...not me, thank you very much ;-)

Ocean31,

Yes, my reply was simply a jab at the blatantly hypocritical actions of our resident left wing extremist, ranter extraordinaire. You don't remember any of his holier then thou rantings about the whales and the seals and the etc etc etc etc and on and on a and on and on....?

BTW Tony,

Northern pike are not "river fish".

The last time you ranted about this I asked you how this was different then shooting fish with a spear gun. You didn't respond.

Why is that?

Not angry or unhappy Tony.

I'm actually quite happy and full of peace. It's funny that when you attack people here it is oh so riteous but when I give a little back you attempt to marginalize me as being "angry and unhappy".

LOL. Oldest trick in the book.

Maybe if you were more careful of your actions they would not come back to haunt you as often as they do?

Fishmore posted 03-22-2010 06:55 PM ET (US)     Profile for Fishmore  Send Email to Fishmore
Sorry gnr but what you "gave back" to Tony does not wash. All the scientific studies that have been done point to environmental decline for spawning habitat(i.e. dams), lack of water (water removed for agriculture), water pollution (again agriculture (pesticides/runoff) societal pollution (sewer runoff and manufacturing)) and poor ocean conditions as being the cause of the Salmon decline on the west coast.

So far all scientific studies have determined that the Salmon have not been subject to over fishing let alone the small take of Salmon by recreational anglers. I could take up several pages of info as to why Salmon stocks are reduced but over fishing by recreational anglers is not one of them. We are having a Salmon season out here this year because our best available scientific studies have shown that this years returns will be viable to at least start a season and see if the scientific predictions for this year are true.

Tony will be participating in the recreational Salmon fishery using a single fishing rod, a maximum of 2 barbless hooks within 5" of each other if trolling or a single barbless circle hook if drifting or anchored, fish size restriction of 20" minimum, maximum of 2 fish per person. That is not the same as finning tons of sharks or killing whales and dolphins from factory processing ships, or clubbing seals in a commercial rape of our resources.

Sorry but you are way off.

Sorry Fishmore but you just don't get it.

Of course the "damage" Tony will do will be essentially insignificant compared to the damage done by commercial fisherman.

And for the record, I have no problem with Tony catching and killing as many of those beautiful, graceful, wondrous, majestic gifts of wonder and joy that nature has blessed us with as he can.

It does however expose him as the hypocrite that he is as the salmon stocks ARE reduced and regardless of the cause any taking of these fish is reducing the stock REGARDLESS of how insignificant.

Add to this fact that the reason he is out there killing nature's wondrous and majestic creations is simply and purely for recreational purposes.

If he had ANY spine at all he would back up his empty rhetoric with some example setting actions.

If I were rich enough and bored enough I would be out there trying to stop the exploitation of these beautiful, graceful, wondrous, majestic gifts of wonder and joy that nature has blessed us with by ramming Tony, attempting to foul his lines and lobbing stink bombs at him.

Now those are truly fine photographs, GBNH. I'm shooting with a tiny Sony 5-meg pocket camera with only a 3x telephoto lens, if that's any excuse for the lack of quality in my shots (I've 'trimmed' them in an attempt to make the images larger, with a substantial loss of contrast and definition). Plus, in answer to John's query, I try to give the critters lots of space (when they don't come up on their own near my boat). I don't know whether California has any specific regulations regarding whale watching, but I don't approach whales closer than approximately one hundred yards. Sometimes, however, as in this photo, the whales come right at you. Here I was towing a friends boat whose engine had blown, and the whale came right at us and sounded beneath the tow line...quite a thrill.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b309/elaelap/ SamanthaIrenetowwhales034.jpg

We see whales all the time up here, Liz. The Gray whale migration runs between January and the end of March, but there are Minkes, Pilot whales, occasional Blues, and other species roaming around our cold waters feeding on the krill, tiny baitfish and plankton most of the year. We don't get Orcas, for some reason.

You gotta see (and hear, and smell) these creatures from a small boat--ideally cruising alone and far from land and other boats--to grasp their gentle majesty.

Tony, thanks for the photos. I begin spring comissioning this Saturday and am getting more pumped seeing the action shots.
I wish we had an edible flatfish something like sand dabs here in NJ this time of year. Winter flounder are hardly worth fishing this year due to very stringent size and bag limits. Two small fish is hardly worth the time and trouble of double anchoring, chumming and using $$ seaworms as bait.
gnr posted 03-24-2010 10:50 AM ET (US)     Profile for gnr
You lose neither contrast nor "definition" (resolution) when you "trim" (crop) a digital photo.

Cropping then enlarging to 100% might expose the already low resolution but a 5mp camera is easily capable of producing photos the size of these at 100% with no discernable resolution problems.

Your photos are typically ok. You could pay more attention to composition and when shooting in the conditions you often do you are asking a lot of the automatic setting on your camera.

Don't be afraid to switch over to AE or M mode if available. If not I'm sure you at least have a P mode which will allow you some freedom with the settings.

Keep trying, you'll get there!

Thanks for that helpful advice, gnr. I try to do my best with this digital stuff, but I guess it's like teaching an old dog new tricks. I'll work on improving my composition skills some too. I guess I've lost my touch over the years since I received a minor in photographic design from UC Berkeley and worked as a photojournalist for a decade before I went to law school (Daily Cal, Berkeley Barb, L.A. Free Press, Associated Press/SF, and Gannett/Westchester-Rockland newspapers, NY).

Hey, I look forward to seeing some nice examples from you. I don't think any of us at this website have ever seen any photos of your boat. Why not post a couple of shots on this thread?

Hey man,

I was just offering some constructive criticism. The hostility part is all up to your perception.

I do understand that news photography is critiqued a bit differently then landscapes/portaits/etc etc etc as you need to get the action first, exposure second and composition often isn't even considered past making sure you get the action.

Your subjects are often very interesting. A little more attnention to detail would tramnsform many of your shots from ok to very nice.

What's a whale smell like? I'll bet it's awful.

gnr posted 03-24-2010 01:09 PM ET (US)     Profile for gnr
Well,

The first one is way to busy for my tastes. A tad over exposed too. I might have made the guys working the subject and placed them to the right third, framing them with the pilot house and that contraption on the bow.

Still busy but less so with a more attracting subject.

I see what you are going for with the second photo but I think it would have been more effective from a lower angle. From this angle I am more interested in what's in the boats rather then the symmetry of the docking. Also a tad over exposed giving it a bit of a washed out look.

It is difficult to balance the exposure in these scenes that combine bright sunlight with shadows. I tend to lean towards losing some of the darker areas in favor of getting the brighter areas properly exposed. These are the conditions that overwhelm the automatic setting on a camera.

I can give you a link where you can post them up and expect some no-punches-pulled critiques from folks who make their living doing this if you like.

Me.... I'm just a loudmouth with a camera....

Jeepers, those are both fine pictures Tony.

I go boating and take pictures. I do not go picture taking and use the boat to get me there. All of my pictures are taken on 'A' for automatic. Sure, I probably should take the time to learn and experiment with other settings but a lot of my pictures are taken while I am on a boat and you take the picture fast before you run over something.

The only reason some of mine turn out OK is the "straighten" and "I'm feeling lucky" buttons on Picasa which is the program I use when downloading the shots on to my computer.

This site is the reason I started taking pictures. I noticed some unusual Whalers and thought that the Whaler nerds might enjoy looking at them also.

The difference John is that you don't take any opportunity to mention that you are (were) an award winning professional photographer.

I myself am just an amateur hobbyist. As such I actually like to hear honest critiques of my photos as that is how I learn and hopefully get a bit better.

Tony,

You say yourself "I'm also just snap-shotting away with my little digital, also always on auto mode,".

As an award winning professional photographer you surely must agree that that is not the way to get the best photo you can. Right? So if that is agreed it only makes sense that my (constructive) criticism is not that far fetched as asking a p&s camera on auto to properly expose those scenes is asking a lot. Right?

I bet if you could strip away your preconceived notions of my motives and just take the criticism at face value you would have to agree that it is valid. You might even find some value in it. Only if you are more interested in growing rather then defending some perceived slight of honor. (kinda ironic eh? the peace activist hippy lawyer going on the ATTACK... lol)

Tony knows what I do for a living. I've stated it in various threads and it was in my profile for years. He even knows where I work as we have exchanged emails from my work addy. I'm not sure of the point of his little game here but I'm sure he has one.

I have never knowingly exchanged emails with you, gnr, nor do I know (or really care all that much) what sort of work you do, if any. No, I guess that's not true. I am always a little curious to find out as much as I can about folks who seem to spend an inordinate amount of time following me around in this virtual world of ours and commenting negatively on just about every statement I make at this website. I guess I should be flattered at all the time you spend dissecting my every word, opinion, and now my little snap-shots. Ya gotta admit, though, it's really kinda weird (if not more than a little kinky), and it's been going on for years. I guess you don't have anything better to do with your life. One solution might be to post an occasional topic at this website--preferably with a bunch of your fantastic photos--describing some of your many super adventures with your Boston Whaler. I can't seem to remember the last time that happened, even though you spend lots of time here almost every day.

You did manage to choke this innocuous thread with all kinds of nonsense--much of it mine, I'm very embarrassed to admit--but that's okay. I usually just ignore trolls--you in particular--but this time I bit. Must have something to do with our up-coming salmon season ;-)

Tony

P.S. Since you've posted about it before, and claim to have emailed me from your workplace, tell us what do you do to make a living, gnr? I've got my own idea, but c'mon, out with it, don't be ashamed...I've got a little bet going with myself, and I'm dying to know whether I'm correct.

Again I have to ask; idiot or liar? You only have to scroll up a tiny bit to find the post where you specifically asked me what I do for work. You've asked this before which seems odd since you don't care. Even more interesting is that you ended the very post I'm quoting from by asking me yet again what I do and even stating that you have a bet with yourself.

So... is it idiot or liar?

A summary of Tony's poste "topics" might look something like. A few pictures of some sea lions sitting on a channel marker or a save the world rant that has nothing to do with Boston Whalers. Fascinating stuff there Tony. Riveting. As much as we have in common one thing we don't share is the insatiable need to feed our egos. You seem to need the adoration and will do anything to get it. Me? I know who and what I am and am quite comfortable with myself. No need to post essentially same pics over and over just to hear myself talk. I certainly wish I had a little more nothing to do with my life right now. Managing my 86 year old MIL's 7 rental units in addition to my regular gig is taking up all my spare time right now. I am looking forward to a Tarpon trip at the end of April though. Taking my 16 year old nephew. But I digress, I know you don't care and all... lol

P.S. Since you've posted about it before, and claim to have emailed me from your workplace, tell us what do you do to make a living, gnr? I've got my own idea, but c'mon, out with it, don't be ashamed...I've got a little bet going with myself, and I'm dying to know whether I'm correct.

Well, I've had a little time to think about it while constructing this response and I think I am going to go with LIAR. I never really thought of you as an idiot. A bit misguided maybe but not an idiot. So I guess that just leaves LIAR. (BTW I LOVE it when you do the "us" thing. Nothing like the drama created by going with the everybody against you tactic. I'm sure you refined that technique back in the day when you out there in the streets fighting the man. Do jurors buy that crap?)

So tell me Tony... is it IDIOT or LIAR? I'm pretty sure I know what it is but I can't settle this litle bet with myself without a confirmation.

LOL

Charming. I'll make a deal with you, gnr, here, publically. I won't comment on any of your posts; I'll gladly ignore you entirely; if you'll please do the same with me. Our insults and unpleasantries poison this fine website. How about it?

Has Tony finally gotten to you? Get a hold man! I do enjoy his photos as I do not have the opportunity to be there and would personally miss them.

Tony
I enjoy most of your posts, but some of them have branded you as someone with too many liberal leanings and should you decide to tone them a bit, your positions would be received in a more palatable manor.

p.s. your lawyer-ing does expose itself in your correspondences and responses.

While I agree with your sentiments to some extent, Erik, I can't help responding that the use of the word "Retarded" in the context of that linked photograph is as obnoxious and hateful to some at this website, including myself, as the words "fag", "kike", "nigger", "spick", "c#nt", etc. See, more of my left-leaning drivel...forgive me.

Scroll down to the section that reads APPROPRIATE CONTENT. I believe we ALL accepted the terms when we clicked "Agree" to registered with this site did we not?

Yes, I've been guilty. Many times for sure!

Tony,
Nice photos of the boats in action, it gets the juices flowing for me to get mine back in the brine.

I for one am anxiously awaiting the salmon season, and am happy to report that I don't have to worry about the fish huggers accusing me of destroying the resource. You see, I'm a fillet and release fisherman:

Me too, Andy. I guess I'm a whale-hugger, but I hug salmon in a different way, when on rare occasions one ends up in my box:

To make sure it's relevant to this website (for a change), that boat I'm standing in is my first Boston Whaler, a very sweet early '70s Katama now owned and enthusiastically, frequently operated out of Bodega Bay by CW member Steve/17 Bodega.

OK, until now, I have tried to avoid this thread, for I truly believe that GNR has some deep pathology. He took this thread to a dark and unnecessary place.

But a line has been crossed here, perhaps in an unintended fashion, by Erik 88Montauk. The link is in every regard completely offensive.

JimH-

Please intervene in this. It is disgusting. It is unclear to me how this GNR person is allowed to post here and how the photo link to a developmentally delayed person is viable.

So it's ok for you to stand up for the retards but it's not ok for me to stand up for the majestic and wondrous salmon?

Funny how that works.... eh?

LOL

ps

I enjoy every photo that's posted here by any poster.

pss

Tony,

Relax man. You take yourself (and me) way to seriously.

Lizard.... Good luck.

I am, at a minimum, puzzled at the lack of intervention by our host in this thread. There is another thread running about editing and closing of threads, for much less atrocious events.

In this thread, a photo insulting to those with mental limitations, is posted, and later supported by a persona non grata.

Mr. Hebert- why is this thread not closed and all of the vile in it removed?

If "it" is a non-searchable item, how is a photo of the above worthy of keeping? Can you discuss what would appear to be ambivalent criteria for allowing a thread of this nature to exist?

The concept of alienating or mocking people with mental limitations expired a decade ago or more. How is this allowable here? I find it embarrassing for this forum.

The forum finds you embarrassing to the forum.

I am, at a minimum, puzzled by your failure to grasp the obvious.

LOL
