I love it! Great book...would love to see this picked up, as I am a reality TV addict and a Whaler addict. What could be a better combo? |

From John Mirassou
Apparently the word is out. Here's the skinny (as of today). A guy who makes television shows read the book loved it and approached me about developing a series. We have been working on the project for over a year now. The first footage, with me in The Whaler in Redondo Beach and my wife, etc., was filmed in April of last year. Cameron and Bertsch joined us in July and we filmed a day with them. Frank the TV guy took 30 hours worth of footage and created the Sizzle Reel, as it is so-called. We've been pitching the Sizzle to different production companies and television networks. We had some success in early February when the William Morris Agency here in L.A. showed a lot of interest. However, they want more tension and drama. We sat and had a heart to heart and decided foundation of the show is strong: In search of the American Spirit. We also realized three mid 40 something guys climbing back into a Montauk to travel 6800 miles (we are going to start in Key West and make the run to Boston) will have plenty of tension and drama. "Can they survive the elements, can they survive each other." Frank the TV guy is in the process of shortening the existing Sizzle and adding the tension and drama. We are still holding out hope for summer 2010 but we are quickly runnng out of time. If not we're lookign at 2011. I'll keep you posted, particularly when the new Sizzle is released. Thanks for all the interest and support |

Hmmm....wonder if you can make some drama? Any old girlfriends from the previous trip?! LOL Good luck with this project - and let us know when you've got an intinerary - would love to connect and run with you guys for part of the trip in the Great Lakes. |

It's kind of sad that an otherwise remarkable story has to have "tension and drama" before it can be marketed to the public (or so they claim). |

How about nightly quizzes/contests for gas at each location?! Could be tense, educational and fun! Seriously though - hope you guys get signed! |

I think the tension and drama will pull in the viewers at first. Once a following of viewers is established it will sell itself and you may see the added drama and tension start to wane. Perfect example is "Ghost Hunters" on the SciFi Channel. A couple Rhode Island plummers get a chance to do a couple pilot shows. They had plenty of drama and tension to go around. Now that whole sub-plot of tension and drama is non existent now that the show has a religious following. |

We just need to add some 50 something guys and some more Whalers and make a rather large convoy. We could all use the adventure! |

John I have to hand it to you, this is a trip that some people only dream of doing. To do something of this magnitude and adventure is outstanding. The best thing that I have ever done was to ride a motorcycle (Harley Davidson) from Miami Beach Fla to Mazatlan Mexico up the coast to Fort Bragg Ca. back across the country to Miami Beac Fl, (2 months). If you can not fine someone to fill one of the spots on the boat let me know. And if you need some tension and drama I can provide that too... |

"The TV business is uglier than most things. It is normally perceived as some kind of cruel and shallow money trench through the heart of the journalism industry, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free and good men die like dogs, for no good reason." --Hunter S. Some years ago there was a documentary titled "On The Water Ways". A guy by the name of Scott Craig and crew took a trawler on the same route. They just stopped and talked to people along the way about the good and bad of their area. No drama. I thought it was quite interesting. We will watch for them to go by. Con |

I have "On The Waterways" on DVD. I did a search on Amazon and it was quite inexpensive. My kids liked it a great deal too. The boat has a Boston Whaler as a tender so there are many shots of it. |

Great video! I was looking the 2010 video section and was trying to determine his boat's re-power arrangement. Is it a 90 hp E-Tec or a 115 hp E-Tec? I did not have a way to zoom into the video to get a closer look. His present day Montauk certainly looks great. The views at the end of the YouTube video gave the best angles for seeing the motor arrangement but I am not as well versed as many of you at determining motors and model years. Bill in NC |

Hey Everyone, what a long strange trip it's been. After reading the book, some guy approaches me, a friend of a friend of the family, and says he wants to make a tv show. Hey, sounds like fun. Come to find the guys a real talent. That seven minute promo was taken from over 30 hours of footage. Had to convince Bertsch and Cameron it was a good idea. Then convinced the wife. I figured if I could sell her on the adventure, I could sell anyone. Still have a long way to go but gettng closer by the day. Thank you for your continued support and ideas. I will keep you appraised as things progress. Afer reading the book, many of you have offered lodging, dinner and libations if I ever found myself in your neck of the woods. Never thought I would stop by in The Whaler again did you? Truth be told, neither did I. Life's an adventure, off we go . . . PS: The motor on the transom is a 90 HP 2000 Ficht, the prelude to the E-Tec. Has been a good motor, had some issues lately . . . it's a 10 year old outboard. |

John- You need to see if you can get Evinrude to sponsor a new E-TEC for your adventure, that would be great advertising for them! I find it hard to believe Boston Whaler hasn't jumped all over this one for advertising! If you contact the towns you visit in advance, you might be able to find human interest stories, points of historic interest, and even some tension and drama! Geez I hope this doesn't get turned into another "reality show"... Glad to hear you're going to do it- we'll be watching for you! -k |

Sound advice Scott. Where were you 20+ years ago? Frank the TV Guy, the producer, doesn't want another "reality show" either. After the "need tension and drama" meeting we sat and talked about it. We both agreed we both like the idea of finding the good in America. We then realized, three middle aged guys, set in their ways, climbing aboard and traveling 6,800 miles in a in a 17-foot boat will create plenty of tension and drama. Especially since Cameron and Bertsch can be such pains in the ars. :) John |

I'm just happy you two guys didn't see the unedited version of the book and all the mistakes with they're their and there, etc.! But, hey, there are plenty of grammatical errors left in book to keep y'all interested. |
